3000th Duel Review

I really wanted to like this game. The models of the character and enemies have a charming chibi-like quality, the look of the early levels looked pretty good, and the gameplay is a cross between Metroidvania and Dark Souls.

However the controls feel floaty and imprecise, the exploration element of Metroidvania is hampered by a slow movement speed (made worse by several actions completely removing momentum), several traps are designed to waste time rather than punish the player or add a sense of tension, bosses range from merely OK to downright terrible due to some rather boring patterns, the Sword swing doesn’t register consistently from specific angles, theres no way to track item drops and which enemies might have an item drop at all and as I progressed the level design went from colorful and detailed to flat, dark and mostly empty. And the Souls-Like elements just add a layer of annoyance rather than fair and rewarding gameplay.

The game -is- early access, so a lot is subject to change but the 2 gameplay design principals of 3000th Duel are at odds with one other, worsening both and making general gameplay sluggish and irritating. So unless the gameplay and boss design are radically changed in a future patch I won’t expect it to change. In fact, unless a lot of drastic mechanical changes are made I find it generally hard to recommend this title.

Summary
An excellent little souls like with delightful Nightmare before Christmas stylings. Smash them up with your sword, axe or magic. Frustrating but fair, I really, really like this.
