Players are able to play most of Puzzle Pirates for free. Payment methods differ across different servers (called “oceans”) on which characters can be created. If playing on a doubloon ocean, players will have to use a virtual microcurrency called doubloons for access to most in-game functions, and in-game purchases will often carry a doubloon cost in addition to the regular cost in the primary in-game currency, Pieces of Eight (PoE). On subscription oceans, access to the entire game is included in the monthly subscription cost and in-game PoE purchases do not have an additional doubloon cost. For example, buying a specific in-game item may cost 5 doubloons and 5,000 PoE on a doubloon ocean, but only 5,000 PoE on a subscription ocean.

Puzzle Pirates Review

One of the most dynamic games I’ve ever played – Shoot a fellow pirate’s ship and you could start a war, start an ironmonger, and the cannonballs you make could end up blowing holes in your ship. Lose at poker, and that money could go towards your enemy’s funds for blockading your island. Everything you do can (and will) have an impact on the world.

There’s a real sense of achievement when you continue the game – you start as a pirate with a bandana, a few clothes, a flimsy foil sword, and you can end up the ruler of an island in a month. There’s no real skill level grinding, due to the rating system that rewards natural puzzling skill. The game is fuelled by it’s vibrant system of crews and flags, supported by the sense of close community – after all, you can’t sail a big ship on your own. The economy is fairly deep, and it is nearly entirely ran by the people who play the game. Need some sugar cane for your distillery? Order it from an island and ship it in, or wait for someone to do it for you.

The game is filled with colour, and the cartoon design adds a nice friendly touch, the games are addictive and fairly plentiful. The range of things you can do as a pirate is massive once you get in to it. A really fun and addictive game. 🙂

Summary
As puzzle games go, Puzzle Pirates is a winner, and it's not just because of how good its puzzles are by themselves, but also because of how it ties all of its puzzles into the larger gameworld, creating a completely self-perpetuating economy and community purely out of puzzling. It's a bizarre concept that's done very well. And even if you don't want to shell out money on a monthly or yearly basis, the $20 price tag is more than worth it for that first free month.
Good
  • A wide variety of derivative, but addicting puzzles
  • A huge online community filled with helpful and pleasant people
  • A good amount of extra activities to take part in outside of pure puzzling
  • Simplistic, but nice Java-based graphical design
Bad
  • Very little in the way of sound
  • The monthly/annual fees for the game are a little prohibitive
8.5
