Dota Underlords Review
Autochess is a popular mod for DOTA that was a big success. I myself have accumulated more than 40 hours of playtime in Dota while never touching the MOBA side of the game.
The autobattler genre is a very peculiar category of game where the player is tasked with the creation of a team of heroes. Each round the players’ squads battle each other autmatically, so the gameplay here is (1) create a synergistic team and (2) position each hero appropriately in the battlefield grid. The fact that you only watch the pieces fight and you don’t fight yourself makes this on of those games that are not for everyone, simple due to the fact that a lot of people might (and will) find this very boring.
Dota Underlords itself is an evolution of Dota: Autochess, making some things better and some things worse. The first thing you’ll notice if you played autochess is the new UI. For new players, the UI is better than before, but unfortunately it is also made for mobile and thus some actions require more clicks than they should.
The core gameplay was left untouched, but changes on how items work and drop have been made: now every hero can only have one item at most and items can be picked from a pool of three when you win neutral rounds (if you lose the round you get to only pick one fixed item, though). This feels a LOT more fair because you always get your item no matter what, while in the mod everything was completely random and unbalanced. Some synergies have different buffs now, like some heroes that have different powers (and there are new heroes too!). Games feels also a little bit shorter due to shorter fights.
Optimization is now a thing: in four hours of playtime I always played with rock solid 60fps, unlike the mod where lategame rounds where a rodeo between 25 and 45 fps. This might be also due to the fact that some animations are now simpler and that now when you level up your pieces they do not change skin like before (with flashy effects on level 2 and 3).
