Eastshade

Eastshade

You are a traveling painter, exploring the island of Eastshade. Capture the world on canvas using your artist’s easel. Talk to the inhabitants to learn about their lives. Make friends and help those in need. Discover mysteries and uncover secrets about the land. Surmount natural impasses to reach forgotten places. Experience how your actions impact the world around you.

Eastshade takes place in a fantasy world populated with animal people, mainly monkeys, bears, deer, and owls. You play as a painter traveling to the island of Eastshade to paint pictures of certain parts of the island for your mother as her dying wish. Unfortunately the ship you’re on runs aground and you find yourself washed up on the shores of Lyndow, a village in Eastshade. From there your journey will take all across the island, from the lush forests, to the bustling capital of Nava, and to the frozen tundras of the north.

With collaborators sprinkled around the globe, we are committed to building worlds that feel like real places, explored through non-violent mechanics.

Eastshade Review

Eastshade is such a game.

In Eastshade you explore a lush and beautiful island, perform quests for its anthropomorphic inhabitants, solve the odd puzzle, and take screenshots that become paintings in the game world. There are no enemies to fight, no horrible impending doom to ward off, and no monsters to chase you around as you go about your business. Eastshade is no paradise – the inhabitants have many problems for you to solve and not everyone you meet is honest about their intentions or requests. But the game is an excellent example of what adventuring can be when combat and violence are not on the menu.

The game is not without a glitch here and there; the game is made by a very small team after all. But it was rare that I found that any little hiccup detracted from my experience.

If anything, Eastshade will do what all good stories and games do – leave you wanting more. I certainly want more Eastshade and was a little sad when I realized that my time on the island was coming to an end. If the developers make a sequel or some DLC, I would certainly buy it!

Summary
By giving you a paintbrush (and a kettle) instead of a sword, Eastshade is a rare first-person open world game that's not about killing but rather about doing good deeds, helping people see the error of their ways, and bringing communities together all through the power of art. It's a breath of fresh Eastshadian air and a genuine, unironic feel-good game. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to put the kettle on.
