When Bum-bo’s only coin is stolen by a mysterious entity and pulled down into the sewer, Bum-bo finds himself facing droves of deranged enemies, lost children, his fears, and eventually the beast that stole his beloved coin.
Gameplay
The Legend of Bum-bo is a puzzle based “deckbuilding roguelike” by Edmund McMillen (The Binding of isaac, Super Meat Boy) and James Interactive, where players collect hordes of items that can be modified, upgraded and comboed with others in many interesting ways. Play as one of many Bum-bo, each with its own unique abilities, as they smash, bash and splash their way through a variety of cardboard monstrosities, giant bosses and dark personal urges…
oh also its the prequel to The Binding of Isaac!

The Legend of Bum-Bo Review
It is a fun little game but it definitely feels like it could use a little more time in the oven when it comes to presentation. The gameplay is all there, it is well thought out and fun to engage with, but there are hardly any graphical options besides a basic Unity launcher before starting the game up.
It feels like a mix between Slay the Spire (having a character move-set but no cards is what I mean) and Bejeweled.
There are other things about the presentation that definitely could use some improvement but for the inexpensive price I would recommend it since I am a fan of Edmund. He puts a lot of care and effort into his games so if the game does well I’m sure he will want to add more content and keep releasing patches.
I’m not sure if I would otherwise play this game since I’m not a huge fan of the puzzle genre and games like this tend to lose my attention as soon as I’ve died on a run and I get frustrated.
One of the frustrating things about the game is not gaining any health between battles, so it feels like a few factors are based on the luck of the moves you gain between combat, and your ability to plan 5 moves ahead on the ‘Gem’ board (or we can call it the Poop Board) will really help you. Mathematicians and puzzle Gods are going to do well with this game, but I’m not great at Bejeweled or Gem type games, and it isn’t something I’m super into.
I can see this turning into something very special with enough time investment and practice, but it needs some graphics options and other things like keyboard shortcut hotkeys.
Worth it to buy if you love puzzle games and Edmund’s art style and work and want to support him. I feel like it will gain an audience once folks know about Edmund’s new game and the people who love Binding of Isaac may be turned off by it’s nature or genre, while those who love puzzle games in general will play a lot.
I will say this.. it IS fun once you get used to the mechanics and learn what your character can do. The fights are interesting (I’m not sure how I feel about the sound effects for the enemies or the music yet) but some aspects of the camera floating around tends to get me a little motion sick if I’m not prepared for it since I’m 33 now and not as nimble as I used to be staring at a monitor.
Overall a fun game, I like the original idea of combining different genres and using the art style from The Binding of Isaac, but without graphical options to turn on Anti-Aliasing or Anisotropic Filtering modes that you like there isn’t a whole lot of control over the graphical quality of the game besides the options I got on the launcher (Beautiful or Fantastic, Fullscreen or windowed, and Resolution, and that’s it).
