Citizens of Space
Representatives of the Galactic Federation, thank you for having me here tonight to celebrate Earth’s acceptance into this noble organization! It is an absolute honor to act as the Ambassador of Earth, a most honorable role, and… what’s that? Earth is… missing!? And it’s up to me to find the missing pieces? And I can recruit citizens of space to do battle for me?
Well then, you’ve got the perfect human for the job! In fact, I was voted second Most-Likely-to-Solve-an-Intergalactic-Mystery in the third grade. I vow, that I will act in all of my power, as the honorable Ambassador of Earth, to put Earth back together and find out who’s responsible! The citizens of Earth are depending on me!
Citizens of Space Review
Both Citizens of Space and it’s prequel Citizens of Earth are charming, retro-styled RPGs that really feel like modernizations of classic RPGs you probably remember from the 90’s and early 00’s. While Citizens of Earth took a lot of it’s inspiration from Earthbound, Citizens of Space is much closer to Paper Mario for the N64 in terms of it’s combat – using timed events and short mini-games for adding some pizzaz and interactivity to your party’s actions. Both games have some light exploration elements hunting for treasure and sidequests and using unlocked characters abilities to give you access to more loot, shortcuts and areas.
I’d recommend this game, but perhaps not as strongly as it’s prequel. Both games are worth the asking price, but I enjoyed the setting and sense of humor of the first game more, honestly. I liked the approachable Earthbound quality of my party being comprised of regular people who I could jokingly name after real folks I know. Citizens of Space’s characters are much more ‘out there’ and reminiscent of a Saturday morning cartoon. Now instead of exploring silly versions of real-life places, it’s feels like a bunch of environments lifted from Futurama. Not bad; just didn’t capture me the same way, personally.
Even with some notable design and UX improvements, there are still some pretty glaring balance and polish issues here. I encountered a few annoying bugs throughout, but nothing game breaking. Except perhaps for that one summon you can get at the beginning of the game and wipe out entire enemy parties and bosses in a single use. Then to boot, the attack does so much damage, it refills your charisma meter and can hence be used again the very next turn. Balance breaking? Certainly. Did I spam it because I was bored with the combat after 30 hours? Yes! Does it kill the last boss in a single hit? Also yes!
This game took me 32 hours to play to 100% completion. All of the content can be seen in a single playthrough; so while there isn’t a New Game + mode; it honestly doesn’t feel necessary. I’d recommend the game if it looks interesting to you. The asking price is fair. I had a good time for the money spent. But again, I’d probably recommend Citizens of Earth a little more strongly. Citizens of Earth left me wanting more after completion. Citizens of Space knew just when to end to not wear out its welcome for me.
