Oxygen Not Included

Oxygen Not Included

Oxygen Not Included is a space-colony simulation game. Deep inside an alien space rock your industrious crew will need to master science, overcome strange new lifeforms, and harness incredible space tech to survive, and possibly, thrive. In the space-colony simulation game Oxygen Not Included you’ll find that scarcities of oxygen, warmth and sustenance are constant threats to your colony’s survival. Guide colonists through the perils of subterranean asteroid living and watch as their population grows until they’re not simply surviving, but thriving… Everything in your space colony is under your control, from excavation and resource allocation right down to plumbing and power systems. Resources will begin depleting with your first breath, however, so be sure to dig fast if you want to live.  Temperature control is a constant concern in space; too cold and you’ll freeze, too hot and you’ll fry. Keep tabs on ambient environmental temperatures and your colony’s heat production to maintain a nice, cozy atmosphere for your colonists.  Create interlocking pipe systems to swiftly deliver fuel and liquid to critical areas of your base. Plan well and be rewarded as your colony transforms into an imperishable, well-oiled machine. Keep the psychological impact of survival at bay with fun leisure activities, great accommodations and even better food for your colony. Duplicants each have different and potentially destructive ways of reacting to stress, so be sure to always keep them happy. Whatever the cost. Choose from a multitude of power sources including coal, hydrogen, natural gas or just plain old elbow grease. Manage power runoff, circuit overloads and meltdowns to keep your colony running smoothly.

Oxygen Not Included Review

Oxygen Not Included is like a mix between Don’t Starve, Terraria, and probably something such as Fallout Shelter (Of course it offers more control and doesn’t have micro-transactions like FS does.). As it develops, the game is definitely getting more and more complex. Early game is fairly simple, but it still has you in the mode of learning as you go…by DYING, just like you did in Don’t Starve. Except this time, you aren’t responsible for just your avatar, but a whole group of Dupicants (ie. Dupes) that you must manage.

Early on the game is fairly easy, but quickly raises the difficulty curve as you expand your base, add more dupes, start using more advanced tech (oh yeah, you must research tech trees so make sure one of your starting Dupes has the Research trait), and using up your resources. You will need to create clean air, food, bathrooms, beds, showers, plumbing, and all things you would associate with surviving in an asteroid (you know…like that time we all did).

The only issue most have in Early Access, which was a similar feeling that I had for Don’t Starve’s EA experience is that there is a bit of a plateau during development when trying to get everything to balance appropriately from the development standpoint, that the game can become something in which you wonder where end game content, purpose, etc. are. You play for a ton of time building up the base, keeping everyone happy, but eventually it feels as if you have gotten to the point that you are in auto-play due to you having figured it all out. Of course as we know now, after seeing Don’t Starve get to fruition, that Klei can and likely will figure this all out by the time they finish this game. What they are doing a bit better for ONI though is that they are releasing content a bit faster, learning how it interacts with the systems better, and I’m sure have learned from the past.

Summary
This game is going to be a another classic on Steam. Make no doubts about it. It will be one like Terraria, Don't Starve, Isaac, etc. that we all will own eventually I am sure. Klei is by far one of the best EA developers on Steam, if not the best at making good on their development. If you like to watch a game change in a professional way, get it now in EA. It's already filled with enough to give you dozens of hours of entertainment, but be aware that systems and other things may change over time.
