Last Day of June

Last Day of June

Last Day of June! A deep, interactive adventure about love and loss, beautifully depicted and offering an intense cinematic experience. What would you do to save the one you love? Last Day of June is inspired by Steven Wilson’s haunting song “Drive Home.” Recreated as an interactive adventure, Last Day of June takes players on a profound and poignant journey. A true artistic innovation in visualizing a bittersweet story told through a welcoming, painterly world that showcases the beauty of life and love, but also the contradictions of loss. Determined to save his beloved and fueled by the power of grief, Carl introduces players to June’s last day. But as they interact with the narrative, players will progress from viewer to a character deeply intertwined in the story. Relive June’s last day by traveling back in time through her paintings in an attempt to change the results of the fateful and final drive home by solving emotionally challenging puzzles. Carl and June’s story progresses at key moments where life-changing decisions need to be made, but players may need to navigate unintentional consequences that create new dilemmas – and potentially new opportunities.

Last Day of June Review

Last Day of June is a game that deals with loss or more specifically with the question of “what if?”. What if you could turn back time and change the chain of events? How much would you have to change just to avoid a single tragedy?

The story is told without words and narration, but rather with beautiful visuals and emotions. You play as Carl, who relives the literal last day of his love June through her paintings and tries to figure out what it would take to save her. You get to play as every character involved in the tragedy and have the task of changing fate by solving their problems.

The gameplay itself is very basic. You repeat the same day over and over again in a small village and have to change certain events in order to avoid the tragedy. Once you helped a character the next one is unlocked, but you can also go back to change what you did for a previous characters. You will get to play as four characters (well, five including Carl) and you have to find the right order of events to change June’s destiny. It can get a little bit frustrating as none of the puzzles are explained in any way and you just have to try and guess to make a specific event happen. Luckily the area is very small so it won’t take you too long to figure everything out.

Overall I’d recommend this game to anyone looking for a beautiful game with an intriguing story. If you’re on the fence, just know that there’s more to the game than meets the eye. It’s definitely worth the experience.

Summary
Last Day of June's brevity is its saving grace, buoying up a story that isn't done any favors by its gameplay loop. There is undoubtedly potential in a game that allows you to alter past events to reshape the present, and Last Day of June shows glimmers of promise; however, it also ruins the emotional impact of its most important event by forcing you to repeat it so many times.
