Zelda Breath of the Wild
Zelda Breath of the Wild! When Link first wakes up, he’s unarmed and defenseless. Relying on his wits and resourcefulness, though, he can acquire over 180 different weapons to use in combat. These items will wear out over time, though, so he must always be on the lookout for more. There’s more to fighting than just weapons, of course. Link will also have to learn a variety of different attacks—like high-flying bow shots and making use of explosives—in order to prevail.
Link will need a full stomach to save Hyrule. Hunt wildlife, pick fruits and vegetables, or raid enemy camps for food to sustain the hero through his adventures. You can even learn recipes to spice things up! New dishes are more than just improving the taste, though—they can also heal Link and boost his stats.
Link can wear some pretty stylish outfits, but different clothes can also help shelter him from the elements or deflect enemy fire. You can find everything from snow gear to armor for Link, but be careful—if you wear metal during a storm, you may be in for a shock!
With this much real estate to explore, Link will need some help in his travels. Luckily, there are plenty of transportation options to unlock. Link can cover a lot of ground quickly on horseback, navigate the waters of Hyrule on a raft, or hit the slopes and surf down a mountain on his shield. And the sky’s the limit when Links soars through the sky with his paraglider.
Breath of the Wild received acclaim for its open-ended gameplay and attention to detail, with many publications describing it as one of the greatest video games of all time. Critics called it a landmark in open-world design, despite minor criticism for its technical performance at launch. It won numerous awards, including several game of the year awards. By December 2018, Breath of the Wild had sold over 11.6 million copies worldwide, making it the best-selling Zelda game.
Zelda Breath of the Wild Review
More than a typical Hyrule fantasy, Breath of the Wild is a daunting survival game that forces you to think in entirely new ways. You have to be cautious, creative, and resourceful in your efforts to battle the wilderness. Outside of armor, you have to source everything from the field. You earn new weapons by stealing from enemies and prepare restorative meals and elixirs by combining resources found in the environment. Death comes quickly, and whether it’s at the hand of a formidable enemy or because you charged unprepared down a treacherous path, you’re forced to reconsider almost everything you’ve learned from past Zelda games.
The game’s four main dungeons are primarily puzzle focused, with only a few enemies sprinkled throughout. They are a bit unusual compared to dungeons in past Zelda games in that you aren’t focused on finding keys to open doors. Instead, the goal is to manipulate the dungeon itself, to literally change its form in order to access important areas. It’s a wonderful break from tradition, while you still get a challenging boss battle to look forward to at the end. Gone are the oddly charming bosses from Zelda’s past; they’ve been replaced with dark and twisted fiends that are powerful combatants. Like your fights against normal enemies, you have to move and act deliberately, or suffer for your cockiness.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is a masterclass in open-world design and a watershed game that reinvents a 30-year-old franchise. It presents a wonderful sandbox full of mystery, dangling dozens upon dozens of tantalizing things in front of you that just beg to be explored. I’ve had so many adventures in Breath of the Wild, and each one has a unique story behind what led me to them, making them stories on top of stories. And even after I’ve spent more than 50 hours searching the far reaches of Hyrule, I still manage to come across things I haven’t seen before. I’ll easily spend 50 to 100 more trying to track down its fascinating moments.
