A Fisherman’s Tale

A Fisherman’s Tale

A Fisherman’s Tale: Bend and twist reality in A Fisherman’s Tale, the mind-bending VR puzzle adventure game in which being turned upside down and inside out is not merely a play on words.

Playing as Bob, a tiny fisherman puppet, you live alone in your tiny cabin, oblivious to the world outside. When your radio broadcasts a storm alert, you have to get to the top of the lighthouse and turn on the light! But as you try to leave your cabin with the help of some uncanny sidekicks, you realize what’s waiting outside is not at all what you expected…

  • Break more than a couple laws of physics in mind-bending VR puzzles!
  • Make it to the top of the lighthouse before The Big Storm, with the help of some uncanny sidekicks!
  • Use your hands to pick up, throw, combine, and use all kinds of things in glorious fully immersive virtual reality!
  • Toy around with your tiny little model lighthouse, inside a lighthouse, inside a… is that another lighthouse?
  • Uncover the truth at the core of an unusually tall Fisherman’s Tale, exclusively in VR.

Brought to you by Vertigo Games, the team behind Arizona Sunshine and Skyworld, A Fisherman’s Tale is developed by INNERSPACE VR in co-production with ARTE France with the support of CNC, Ville de Paris New Media Fund and BPI France.

A Fisherman’s Tale Review

This game has been on my Top Most-Anticipated VR Games list for a while now.

Having played it, if I were to sum this game up in one word, it would be “charming”.

I completed this game in a little over an hour all in one sitting–or standing–but it was an absolute quality time throughout.

I won’t beat around the bush–this is a short game, and if you’ve beaten it once, you can beat it again in a matter of 30 minutes (including cutscenes). BUT, with it’s game-length comes the benefit of having others experience this game as well.

This is the kind of game that I can’t wait to show my friends and have them try out for themselves to see what VR can be. Some people won’t believe in VR storytelling until they’ve put on the headset, but I think this is one of the games that will make believers out of those who doubt the capabilities of this relatively new medium.

Immediately, you’re immersed in this cozy world within worlds and you’re left gawking and grinning at the scale of it all. The art direction of this experience is a beautiful one and, though the this game largely takes place more or less in the same place, the setting grew on me and I felt this sense of being “at home” as I explored little rooms that were slowly revealed to me.

All in all, It’s a short and sweet, puzzly experience.

It’s charming, and it’s definitely worth a buy.

Summary
A Fisherman’s Tale is a typical puzzle-solving first-person VR experience that stands a cut above with a good-quality gimmick that doesn’t overstay its welcome. It barely stays long enough to finish saying hello, but it has the wit, charm, and novelty to make it worth the single sitting it’s asking for.
