Assassin’s Creed Origins

Assassin’s Creed Origins

Ancient Egypt, a land of majesty and intrigue, is disappearing in a ruthless fight for power. Unveil dark secrets and forgotten myths as you go back to the one founding moment: The Origins of the Assassin’s Brotherhood.

The player takes on the role of a Medjay named Bayek and his wife Aya, as they work to protect the people of the Ptolemaic Kingdom during a time of widespread upheaval: the Pharaoh, Ptolemy XIII, struggles to maintain his rule while harbouring ambitions of expanding his kingdom; his sister, the recently deposed Cleopatra, begins marshalling loyalist forces to launch a counter-coup against Ptolemy; and frequent incursions into the Kingdom by the Roman Republic under the command of Julius Caesar lead to fears of an imminent invasion. Bayek’s role as a Medjay brings him and Aya into contact with the secretive forces manipulating these events and into becoming the first Assassins.

Assassin’s Creed Origins Review

Assassin’s Creed Origins is a game I’ve wanted to play since release. I’ve adored Ancient Egypt for a long time now, and seeing a massive open world game set in Ancient Egypt definitely caught my attention. However, the fact that it was an Assassin’s Creed game put me off a little bit, seeing as how the recent games have turned out. I’m a fan of Brotherhood and Revelations. I played the third game and didn’t really enjoy it. I played Black flag as more of a fan obligation rather than wanting, and I didn’t even bother with any of the others after that. Eventually, I decided to buy it anyway and give it a go…

…and oh boy, It’s been a ride. It’s hard to know where to begin with this game. There so many things to talk about, some good, some bad. I’ll start off with what I liked about it.

The game world is spectacular. It’s one of the best, if not, the best game world I’ve ever seen. The landscapes are stunning. From the mountanious valleys to the vast deserts and beautiful plains, all containing dozens of locations for the player to explore. The world is teeming with wildlife and people. Each zone of the map contains different types of people with varying politcal opinions.

The slight RPG approach is a welcome addition and has been designed rather well. Every time you level up you earn a skill point which you can use to improve your combat capabilities. The variety of weapons and equipment is also good and well balanced out.

Climbing is a lot smoother than the previous games, and is less annoying, beside the occasional inconsistencies. The combat, while not perfect, is also a lot smoother and more freestyle, making fights more varied and interesting.

Overall, this is one of the best games I’ve played since Witcher 3. My only gripes are pretty minor. Several of the quests require you to follow someone who walks very slowly. I’ve gotten stuck following these people as they slowly walk across the city because I decided to launch the quest at the wrong time of the day. It’s very annoying, but fortunately rare. Also, inventory management can be a pain.

Summary
Assassin's Creed Origins reaches great heights in this new setting, it routinely runs into issues that bog down the overall experience. Technical issues make for an inconsistent experience and its new gameplay pillars wobble under the weight of its systems. But despite this, the world of Origins remains fresh and exciting to explore, which is a testament to the remarkable setting and compelling story. Assassin's Creed has undergone many changes in its long and storied history, and Origins feels like the first step in the start of a new journey. It has its fair share of problems, but the vision for its future is one worth pursuing.
