Blade and Sorcery

Blade and Sorcery

The era of the VR weightless, wiggle-sword combat is over. Blade & Sorcery is a medieval fantasy sandbox like no other, focusing on melee, ranged and magic combat that fully utilizes a unique and realistic physics driven interaction and combat system.

Built exclusively for VR, collisions are dictated by fine hitboxes, objects have weight and follow the laws of physics, creatures have full body physics and presence, and blades can be used to penetrate soft materials or deflect magic.

In Blade & Sorcery, the combat is limited only by your own creativity. Choose your weapon, choose your stance, choose your fighting style; Be the powerful warrior, ranger or sorcerer you always dreamed of becoming!

Blade and Sorcery Review

After having played a bit more since buying it, and having tried some betas to see the direction it’s going, I can honestly say that Blade & Sorcery is THE BEST implementation of melee combat in VR I have ever experienced. Although the weapon weights can require some tuning depending on personal preference (under the “experimental” physics tab in the menu), after some brief tuning (I have mine set to .70, .90, 1.55, and 1.20) the game plays like a dream. Combat scales well between difficulties, actually going from effortless to challenging based on AI difficulty and the number of enemies you’re facing at once, and there are a sufficient variety of weapons that you won’t get bored too quickly. Even if you do get bored of weapons, going magic-only is still fun – although currently the only spell implemented is lightning, it works very well, even realistically being attracted to metal objects such as shields or weapons, and the telekinesis is perfectly natural, such that it feels like a normal extension of your hand.

Although the game is currently only a sandbox, with 3 maps to play in (Ruins, an open-air cathedral with a darker aesthetic, lit by torches and moonlight; Arena, a classic sand-filled gladiator pit with some stone columns to break the monotony; and Market, a open-air, sunny market area with some stairs, a variety of terrain, and a well in the center which you can jump in and climb out of (and throw enemies into), I would highly recommend it to anyone with a VR headset, as the magic and combat is implemented perfectly, and the dev (yes, singular – this is the product of ONE man’s work) seems to have a great vision for what he wants the game to be, and is working hard to improve it daily.
