Bug Fables The Everlasting Sapling Review

Yes, Bug Fables is mechanically superior to the Paper Mario games, in my view. Bug Fables’ turn-based combat is deeper then Paper Mario’s, but just as accessible. With three party members, each of whom are equally important, the game introduces mechanics like ordering the party, where the party member in front gets an attack boost, but is more likely to be attacked by enemies. The most clever battle mechanic however, is turn relay, which allows one party member to pass their turn to another, allowing for one character to act multiple times in a single turn, at the cost of reducing the attack power of the Bug acting multiple times. This mechanic adds an extraordinary amount of depth to the combat system: even late into the game I found I was kicking myself when I thought of a more optimal strategy I could have used if I were making better use of Turn Relay. Bug Fables’ medals (The equivalent of Paper Mario’s badges) include a lot of very unique effects which create new strategy opportunities. These include a badge which causes one party member to take more damage but gives the other two a buff whenever the vulnerable character gets hit, and entire series of badges based around making party members stronger when they’re afflicted by status conditions like Poison and Stun.

Also, remember how in the Paper Mario games, Goombario or Goombella could Tattle on enemies, revealing info about their stats and behaviors? It was a pretty great mechanic, but frustratingly required Goombario or Goombella to be active, even if you would rather fight the enemy with a different partner. Well Bug Fables’ answer to Tattle, Spy, can be performed by ANY of the three heroes. Each has a unique commentary on each enemy, but you only need to spy once to get access to all 3 characters’ takes in your quest log. And if that wasn’t enough of an improvement over Paper Mario’s system, get this: The spy data on every single enemy you Spy on becomes a card based on that enemy that you can use in the minigame “Spy Cards.” A series of sidequests revolves around this game. I think the Spy mechanic is a perfect example of the way the Bug Fables devs improved upon their inspirations in this game.

So, in conclusion, I would definitely strongly recommend this game to anyone who likes the first two Paper Mario games, turn based RPGs, character driven RPGs, and/or insects.
