Players assume the roles of four classic Contra series characters, as a former military group of bounty hunters and treasure finders: Kaiser, a rebuilt cyborg from The Alien Wars; Ms. Harakiri, an assassin with a parasitic alien attached; The Gentleman, a well-cultured alien bug; and Hungry Beast, a brilliantly scientific cyborg giant panda.
Players configure a main weapon and sub-weapon in realtime. These have unlimited ammunition, but with a heat meter to be managed. Between stages, weapons are upgraded and uniquely customized. As a last resort, the player can clear the area with a huge bomb or use the character’s special ability.
Contra Rogue Corps Review
I had high hopes from Konami but sadly the critics are right and this game just isn’t fun. Contra was all about shooting everything that moves, and while this game isn’t different, I feel the fatal flaw is silly mechanics like the overheating system. Add to that design flaws that i’m surprised managed to get through QA such as the gimmicky zombies sticking to the screen (which blocks your view for about 1 second, which is a LOT when you’re surrounded by a horde), or enemies like turrets that attack you from off-screen!
Multiplayer seems non existent (haven’t been able to join any public rooms so far), the levels are just lazy – increasing enemy HP and Attack is the only difference in a lot of levels! To make things even more annoying, frame rate is capped at 30 FPS.
Shame – this could have been something greater.
