The story: The epic journey of a clone
After 700 years of peace and prosperity, the Galactic Empire has suddenly been shattered into pieces. The OMNIs, god-like machines which did everything for their human masters, have mysteriously shut down. And humankind, having long since lost the ability to survive on its own, is dangerously close to extinction. But somewhere in a far corner of the Galaxy is Gehenna, a planet of ice and rock and a top-secret facility that is the pinnacle of Imperial Tech and also humanity’s last chance.
You are a clone of Admiral Ellys Idaho, a weapon fashioned from flesh, the best Imperial Admiral ever to battle in the stars and you have just been awoken on this planet by its strange and darkly-humorous Guardian, Kaliban, the last functional OMNI to exist.
Your mission: skillfully command a battleship through the Empire’s now chaotic, violent clusters ––where one wrong move could be your last–– as you try to reactivate the OMNIs and save the future of all humankind. But you must leave Gehenna now…. for time has almost run out.
Crying Suns Review
Crying Suns is a strategy rogue-lite experience where you play as a clone of an Imperial Admiral and an important quest awaits you. You need to find out what happened to your empire, which is now in a shadow of its former glory, and to your original body. The story, lore, and factions are the biggest strength of this game for me as I was always interested to seek more answers.
The game contains 6 chapters. In order to finish the chapter, you need to complete three sectors which always end with a boss battle. If you die you need to start again as is custom in other rogue-lite games. But Crying Suns is more benevolent with its players because the progress is saved after each chapter which means that you do not need to replay the whole game.
At the start of each chapter, you choose your battleship and officers which offer various bonuses to your dialogue choices, battleship abilities, and planet explorations. You travel between randomly generated systems. You encounter enemies, special events, anomalies, planets, and many other things. During this exploration part of the game, you gather resources, upgrade your ship and talk with various characters.
I finished the game in about 15 hours with 2 restarts which I consider a fair amount of time for its price of 21€. The problem is that rogue-lite games are supposed to have a high replay value that I just do not see here for the following reasons. You cannot replay a chapter except for the last one which means that you need to erase your progress along with your unlocked ships, and officers. Also, several special events like “pirate’s map” or “donation to church” repeat themselves over and over even in the same sector which gets tedious very quickly. So, if you expect to do more runs in this game, you need to wait for the developers to solve these issues.
