Death Road to Canada

Death Road to Canada

Death Road to Canada is a Randomly Generated Road Trip Simulator. You control and manage a car full of jerks as they explore cities, recruit weird people, argue with each other, and face gigantic swarms of slow zombies.

Death Road is built for replay value. Everything is randomized: locations, events, survivor appearances and personalities. There’s a different story every time you play, set in a world that doesn’t take itself too seriously.

Death Features:

  • Up to 500 zombies can hunt you down at a time. Fight them, try to squirm past, or run.
  • Use the character creator to put yourself, friends, and family in the game. Have them show up at random to get eaten!
  • Find special and rare events, weapons, and characters with strange abilities.
  • Make tough choices in Interactive Fiction events. Get different options and results based on the traits of your party members.
  • Teach a dog how to drive a car.
  • Throw chairs. Get your characters strong enough to throw large sofas.
  • Most family friendly zombie apocalypse game on the market! Any gore explosion is in a cute style. We censor the word d*ngus once.
  • Tell people to “Cool it.”
  • 2 player local same screen co-op where you control up to 4 characters!

Death Road to Canada Review

Death Road to Canada is set in the zombie apocalypse. America has been completely overrun, and the player has to drive and fight their way north, to the safety of Canada.

You need to search buildings for food, fuel for your car, medical supplies, weapons (melee and guns) and ammo. You’ll also encounter scenarios, for example bandit attacks, or hazards blocking the road, and your choices can result in positive or negative consequences. Each character in your group has a range of stats including strength, shooting, medical, mechanical and morale, which can be either increased or decreased. You could also gain or lose supplies, or take damage.

You’ll start with either one or two characters, and along the way you’ll meet new people who you can recruit, up to a maximum party size of four. You directly control one character, but you can switch at any time. Party members can die permanently, but as long as you’ve still got one person alive, the journey can continue.

The best part of the game is the special characters who can be recruited. My favourite so far is Valkyrie, who is pretty much a female version of Marvel’s Thor, equipped with Mjolnir and capable of smashing through zombies in melee and at range. I’ve also met a professional boxer who has killer punches, a medieval knight, and a sumo wrestler.

The core gameplay loop is enjoyable, but my main problem with DR2C is that its really short. A successful run only takes around 90 minutes, and I survived all the way to Canada on my second attempt. After that all you can really do is roll a new character and go again. Sure, you’ll encounter some different scenarios and meet new characters, but you’ll also quickly start to see repeats. There are some different gamemodes (shorter journey, extended journey, special characters only, hard mode) but they don’t really vary the gameplay at all. In less than 6 hours I’ve beaten 3 gamemodes, and I’m already feeling a lack of motivation to continue. Having said that, purchase price is cheap so its easy to get value for money.

Summary
Death Road to Canada is a special adventure with a lot to offer. I’ve lost count of just how many times I’ve tried to journey to Canada but I’m still running into a ton of new event scenes and making characters is a blast. Being able to unlock new perks and traits make me even more willing to go back and create more characters to run into during my next trip. If you don’t mind difficult games with a lot of surprise elements to them, I’d strongly suggest picking up Death Road to Canada.
