Door in the Woods
This game is a venture into an alternative timeline in which graphics and sensible game design were never invented.
Door in the Woods is an open world roguelike inspired by lovecraftian mythos. Explore a world in which every possible extinction scenario became reality – from zombie plague through alien invasion and to awakening of the great old ones.
Player takes role of one of the last survivors who is trying to make sense of the new reality in which even the most basic rules of physics do not always apply. Survival hinges not only on finding enough sustenance or fending off zombies, but more crucially on keeping your mind intact and safe from the horrors. It turns out that suicide is sometimes the better option.
Features:
– lack of graphics
– open world
– extremely limited color palette
– day/night cycle
– almost no audio
– crafting
– questionable design choices
What can you do in this game?
– drink from a puddle and get sick
– hide in bushes from zombies
– fight cannibals and ironically eat them afterwards
– commit suicide
– find door in the woods
Door in the Woods Review
If you’re a fan of ASCII roguelikes, survival horror, or ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ your pants when you see the letter H, this is a title for you.
The playthroughs are short and brutal. The enemies are strong and you’ll be lucky to survive more than a handful of fights. You’ll be thirsty, starving, and insane as you limp into your second night. When you open an innocuous door only to see the ungodly form of a horror looming before you, you’ll laugh because you knew death was coming, and here he is. Hello old friend. With a hearty cackle you’ll throw a brick straight into the face of the unspeakable. As you limp, bleeding down the hallway, you’ll toss that last resort molotov you were saving, even though you know it’s in vain. As the building burns around you and the fiery blood-drenched face of a thousand nightmares lunges, the last thing you’ll hear will be the reassuring click on the hammer of your revolver as you turn it on yourself.
Visually, the game blurs boundaries between 2D and 3D, giving you more more visual information than a classic topdown view. Interesting lighting choices and a minimalist color palette help set a bleak and often terrifying mood.
The mechanics are what you’d expect from a roguelike, and few interesting design choices mix things up. The sanity system forces you to walk the tightrope between losing it all (dying while insane), and progressing your character. In true lovecraftian fashion, that last bullet is often reserved for you, the player.
All in all, I’d heartily recommend this to anybody looking to form a negative association with certain letters of the alphabet. 11/10
