Far Cry 5 Review
I had a lot of fun with this game. I enjoyed the story of the cult taking over in rural America. The graphics were amazing, the sounds wonderful, even the music when driving was pretty good (not GTA good, but good). The action was very smooth and so random. I could attack cult members and save a random hostage only to watch an airplane randomly fall out of the sky and explode on the hillside while a bear comes out of nowhere and mauls the hostage I just saved. It’s that kind of random action that really makes Far Cry 5 fun to play.
There are some things that aren’t that great though. I can’t say that I enjoyed fishing at all. I just didn’t understand how it worked so I didn’t have fun. I didn’t like the slow process of getting from one area to another as the whole land you can travel around in is huge. Luckily you eventually get to fast travel and once you can jump from up high and use your flying squirrel outfit, things tend to move a little faster.
You can ride quads, cars, helicopters, airplanes, boats and there are a variety of all of these vehicles…some with guns. The guns themselves are varied. You can go purely stealth and try to free an area without ever being noticed. Or you can use your rocket launcher or grenade launcher to really destroy everything in site. You can even customize your weapons with sightings, silencers, different clips, and more.
The landscape, while not hugely varied is still varied enough to make certain areas look unique and quite lush and beautiful. You can really get lost in this wilderness and truly enjoy the waterfalls, go rock climbing, or just take a trip down the river to check things out. The whole area is teaming with deers, mountain lions, buffalo, bears, and so much more including birds. Everything comes together real well to truly immerse you in this world.
I found the characters, the 3 brothers and 1 sister to be interesting, though I must admit that the ultimate boss played what I thought a great cult leader and did a good job of playing the part and sounding authentic, including looking authentic. There are many missions, many prepper stashes to discover, and many collectibles to find. This game can keep you busy easily for 100 hours. Don’t get fooled by my hours of play as I tend to leave my computer idle at times.
I would say that you should definitely pick this up and play it as I haven’t had this much fun with Far Cry since the original. I stopped playing the series after a dismal Far Cry 2 and now I’m motivated to play 3 and 4 to see if they offer a similar type of gameplay. You just can’t go wrong here whether you want to hike around and hunt or fish, follow the story lines, fly around, or just do whatever you want, this game and map allows you to do so much that you’ll find something to enjoy.
