Far Cry New Dawn

Far Cry New Dawn

Dive into a transformed vibrant post-apocalyptic Hope County, Montana, 17 years after a global nuclear catastrophe. Join fellow survivors and lead the fight against the dangerous new threat the Highwaymen, and their ruthless leaders The Twins, as they seek to take over the last remaining resources.

The player assumes the role of a new character, whose gender and race can be customized. The Guns for Hire and the Fangs for Hire systems from Far Cry 5 return, with the character being able to recruit human survivors and animals for combat assistance. In addition to new characters, the game’s cast includes an array of returning characters from Far Cry 5. The player character can also encounter several specialists who have their own personal missions, special abilities and story and help players to repair their weapons. New weapons are introduced in the game, including a “Saw Launcher” that fires the blades of circular saws. Players acquire new weapons and attachments, which can be upgraded to three different levels through crafting and finishing missions. Vehicles can also be crafted.

Players can embark on treasure hunts and liberate different enemy encampments and outposts. Once liberated, they become fast travel points that enable players to quickly navigate the world. These outposts can be occupied and used to manufacture ethanol fuel or raided for resources which leaves the outpost open to “escalation”, in which the Highwaymen may reclaim these camps. This allows the player to replay the outposts on higher difficulty settings. The game also features an upgradable home base named Prosperity, which would slowly expand and grow in size as players progress. The game also features a mode called “Expeditions”, which allows the player to travel to other locations in the United States such as Louisana to look for more resources and packages. As these regions are outside the main map and smaller in size, the development team was able to create more complex environments for Expeditions. Expedition missions can be completed with other players.

Far Cry New Dawn Review

I played this on Hard difficulty with a minimal UI. Far Cry: New Dawn is a continuation of the story of Far Cry 5. It is more like an expansion, but there are more than enough core gameplay changes that justifies it’s status as a stand-alone game.

Here’s what it did right: You completely control how far you advance the plot at all times. Your companions gain abilities as they rack up kills while at your side. Treasure hunts are vastly improved, are way more involved, and do a good job of weaving into the story of the game. There are multiple ways to earn currency to upgrade your home base and weapons. Every side activity has a purpose.

Here’s what it did wrong: All weapons are crafted and are gated behind tiers. There are 4 tiers. The first good bow you get is tier 3 of 4. There is no reason to not immediately advance to weapon tier 3 and disregard everything else. Vehicles are also tiered, but there is no reason to craft a vehicle unless it has mounted guns. The first land vehicle you can craft with mounted guns is in tier 3, but you automatically get a car with mounted guns when you recruit a certain companion, which means upgrading your garage is completely useless. Expeditions are stupid, meaningless, and do not offer you enough of a special reward to do them, considering you can just kill an Elite Boar, Cougar, Bear, or Bison for the materials you need at less than half the effort.

Overall it’s much more video-gamey, but thankfully you can turn a lot of the UI changes off. If they are going to continue to build on this formula for future games, while it is a good start, many areas need a major reworking.

Summary
As someone who loves the Far Cry formula and will take my fix wherever I can get it, revisiting Far Cry 5’s slightly reworked open-world map in New Dawn proves there’s still quite a bit of joy to be found in clearing outposts and generating as much chaos as possible, in single-player or co-op. I could’ve done without the silly story and disappointing final boss, but Expeditions are a thrilling new mode, and the story missions are exciting more often than not. New Dawn is an enjoyable diversion while we wait for Far Cry’s next big thing.
