Gensou SkyDrift Review
Fans of Touhou, Sonic Riders and/or Mario Kart Double Dash (or 8 if you think about it another way) rejoice: you have a game that, while small and a tad light on content, tries to accommodate these diverse qualities into one package. You have your Touhous. You have your anti-gravity track-design. And you have a tag-team mechanic – albeit one that doesn’t seem quite intuitive and might’ve done better with more explanations about some of the finer mechanics that underpin it. The way items are attained and gotten also is a little unorthodox and takes getting used to if you are used to fixed item box placement on tracks like I was.
For what the game is – a fangame without the polish of any Triple-A title – there’s enough joy in the gameplay to satisfy those that need their hoverboard racing fix or another Touhou fangame to sink teeth into. The game isn’t perfect – the game does have a few issues with texture popping and odd collision detection at times – an while it is packed with a score of characters and tracks, you’ll chew through the campaigns quickly in about 1.5-2 hours once you get the controls downpat. After that it’s just your typical racing freedom – time trial, basic races, and an online race component that even allows private matchmaking – but that is currently region-locked; with region selection coming in a future update.
The main concern will be the price. At 20% off – like it is currently – the price seems reasonable, especially once Online is fixed up. But the base price definitely seems a little too high unless you know you’ll love this game before you buy it, since for the money being paid there’s little extensive content to make the money seem worth as much as it is.
I still recommend this game – it scratches the Sonic Riders Zero Gravity itch I’ve been wanting to scratch for the longest time – and while it could benefit from some sort of additional content like achievements (which it doesn’t currently; meaning campaign is just for unlocking tracks and characters alone), provided it’s at the right price, it’s a decent enough game to warrant looking into.
