Halo The Master Chief Collection Review

This is a fantastic port and remaster of a classic series. If you liked the original Halo games, you can feel secure in your purchase here.

They’ve done a lot of work with the textures, and it shows—the environments have been spruced up a bit, but the character models especially have been retooled to near-modern standards. It also runs exceptionally on my system—I’m managing 200+ fps nearly constantly (depending on how much Michael Bay is going on on my screen), and that’s at 1440p with a GTX 1080, settings to the highest they’ll go, with 120 FOV. Speaking of that; the field of view slider is particularly nice. It shows the team remastering this were listening to the demands of their potential PC customers. I’m sure adding that took some extra work on the part of the devs, and it’s much appreciated. TotalBiscuit would have been so happy to see it.

Time to manage expectations, though. Don’t expect a fully modern shooter with the Halo games! Even with the fresh coat of paint, Halo still feels like Halo—and this is not necessarily a good thing to some people as it’s a very particular taste.

Movement and jumping has always felt a bit floaty in Halo games. The campaign difficulty might be a bit higher than folks might be used to, and stronger enemies such as the elites can feel a bit bullet spongey. It will take some time to get used to not being able to aim down iron sights for every weapon, and for sprint to not be readily available. And some of the great leaps forward that Halo helped the genre with—such as perfect pacing, recharging health, and excellent vehicle control—feel more commonplace now than they did when Halo: Combat Evolved came out for Xbox and PC back in 2001, and thus feel less special despite their long history here.

If you’re looking for a classic adventure, though, or a history lesson given by a high-water mark in the shooter genre, then look no further. Halo: Reach, in particular, has a poignant, phenomenally written and designed campaign that will leave you reeling despite its minimalist storytelling. It’s the best campaign of the series, and one of the best single player shooter campaigns ever crafted. ODST had a groundbreaking, low-key style that was widely regarded as a master class in atmosphere when it released. Halo: Combat Evolved features one of the best plot twists in gaming history in the Flood.

And, of course, the original trilogy had a sprawling, exciting plot with a pitch-perfect conclusion. Remember when celebrated media franchises used to have jaw-dropping, all-time-great endings? Halo represents the era of Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, and Breaking Bad—and the conclusion of Halo 3 will make you forget all about the disappointing final seasons of Game of Thrones and the contrived absurdity of the new Star Wars sequels.

To top it off, all of these games have world-class, greatest-of-all-time caliber soundtracks. You’ll be humming some of these songs in the shower after a night of playing. Others will bring a tear to your eye for years to come, whenever you hear them.

Bottom line? These games are absolute classics, and for good reason. If you’re looking for exciting, action-packed shooters with worthwhile storytelling then look no further.
