ICEY is a 2D side-scrolling action game and a META game in disguise. As you follow the narrator’s omnipresent voice, you will see through ICEY’s eyes and learn the truth about her world. The narrator will constantly urge you in one direction, but you must ask, “Why? Why am I following his directions?“ Obey? Rebel? Alright, you caught me! ICEY Review

On the surface, ICEY looks like a simple 2D hack-and-slash game with slight RPG elements, but its story and message go a lot deeper than that by merging in narrator 4th wall breaks and philosophical questions surrounding obedience and free will.

The dialogue and story remind me a lot of The Stanley Parable: Humorous, thought-provoking, and interesting. It is the kind of meta-narrative game that is best enjoyed without me spoiling it here for you.

The gameplay is top notch as well. There are tons of combination attacks you can perform and unlock, combat is very fluid, and the counter/finishing attacks are very satisfying. Did I mention that the animations are also gorgeous?

My only real complaint with the game is that narration delivery feels a bit flat at times. Since the main game-dev voices the narrator, I can understand that it isn’t up to hired voice-actor levels, but when the rest of the game feels significantly more polished, it stands out.

Summary
We came away from ICEY satisfied with the amount of engaging combat we'd been given via the cool combos and special attacks, but underwhelmed by the meta-narrative and the length of time we spent with it. It suits the Switch perfectly because of this brevity, making it just the right length for a flight or long train ride, but it left a lot to be desired, which is a shame considering the world it constructed and the mayhem that ICEY can cause.
