Ion Fury
While Shelly “Bombshell” Harrison earned her codename defusing bombs for the Global Defense Force, when evil transhumanist mastermind Dr. Jadus Heskel unleashes the members of his cybernetic cult onto the streets of Neo DC, she knows it’s time to start causing explosions instead of preventing them.
Her quest to slay Heskel leaves a trail of carnage throughout huge, multi-path levels filled with gigantic explosions, more secret areas than we can count, and inhuman foes behind every corner. There’s no regenerating health here; stop taking cover and start running and gunning.
Shelly’s crusade to take down Heskel’s army will see her leave destruction in her wake with a wide arsenal of weapons, complete with alternate fire modes and different ammo types. Her signature revolver, the tri-barreled Loverboy, brings enemies pain and players pleasure with both single shots and Old West-style hammer fanning action. Who needs a regular shotgun when you can load buckshot into your grenade launcher? Violent, over-the-top Bowling Bombs rip enemies apart with ease.
Ion Fury laughs at the idea of mandatory checkpoints and straight paths through shooting galleries. But, just because this is a true old-school first-person shooter doesn’t mean we’ve ignored all the good new stuff the last two decades have brought. Headshots? Hell yeah. More physics and interactivity? You betcha. Widescreen, controller support, and Auto Saves? 3D Realms and Voidpoint have taken the best of both worlds and cooked it all into a bloody stew.

Level designs that are drawn from the inspirations of 3D Realms previous games for the better but with that also comes with some spots that I thought i had missed a lever some where.(this part may or may not be right) The ambush in the subway system for example, I feel like I tried to open the door and spent a while searching the level and examing the environment until I tried to crouch and open the door at the same time. In retrospect it seems obvious to do that but it really broke up the tempo of the game for something that subtle.
Remaining on the topic of the level for a brief second, the game’s engine still shows its age and looking down or up stretches out the enrionment which can make some platforming and item collection into a mess of warped textures and luck.
Enemies are designed well enough, the first two do appear a little “samey” and their voice lines are repeated quite often. “fan out” and “over here” As the game progresses more dangerous and swarming types appear which break up the mold.
The boss fight in this early access version is fun, not challenging and falls into the trap of showering you with armor and weapons before hand which might as well have been a sign saying this is the level’s boss fight. A bunch of enemies spawn on the right side of the map and then the boss showes up. The boss has the ability to destory terrain, which is awesome, but besides that I threw grenades at it until it died. I got to pick up a minigun and before firing a single round the level ended.
This game shines with its ‘tude where it will challenge you to kill all enemies and find all hidden spots tucked away within the game’s beautifuly retro design but certain aspects still need ironing out. This a game for the fans of 3D Realms previous titles and other games within this genre of 90s shooters.
