Kindergarten 2 Review
Con Man Games has done it again with an excellent sequel to Kindergarten. This game does take place chronologically after the first game, so it’d be wise to play that one first. If you HAVE played that one already, you pretty much already know what you’re getting into here.
This game is significantly longer than the original. While I managed to achieve 100% and change in the first game with only five hours of play time, I’ve only completed the main story line so far in the same amount of time in this one. There are many welcome additions along the way. The disorganized hints system has been replaced with an easy to follow “missions map,” which gives just enough information to know what missions to do next without revealing too much detail. Your character can now be clothed in outfits that you unlock by playing the game. Monstermon has been expanded into a full mini game, complete with full (pixel) artwork for all cards, and many more cards to choose from with the same wit to their titles and descriptions that made them such a joy to collect in the first game.
While this game was in development, the developer promised early on that the frustrating “unforseeable chokepoints” from the first game (such as Buggs beating you up at the end of Cindy’s mission) would not return. While that’s certainly welcome, it means that every mission can now be completed first try without too much trouble. The first game felt much more difficult in this regard, requiring the player to learn patterns in the game and solve puzzles based on that. Without needing to ever start a day over, Kindergarten 2 plays out more like a series of errand quests, with characters telling you outright what to do, and only minimal puzzle solving required.
Overall, Kindergarten 2 is a more than serviceable sequel to the first game. If you’ve played Kindergarten, you will not regret picking up Kindergarten 2.
