Kirbys Extra Epic Yarn
One ticked-off sorcerer just banished Kirby, warping the poor puffball to a yarn world in need of saving. The twist? Having a yarn body is epic! Kirby can transform into knitted wonders like tanks and flying saucers. Plus, his new ravel abilities mimic his classic copy abilities, adding something new to every stage of this action-adventure game! Ravel abilities allow Kirby to drop buttons like bombs or wield a wire like a sword. And that’s just the beginning of all the makeshift magic. Dead end? Unzip a secret passage. Too dark? Unbutton the night to shed some light. Boss blocking your way? Unravel its face! As you play, you’ll collect decorative treasures for Kirby’s Pad. Show yours off with the StreetPass feature! If story mode isn’t tough enough, see if you can earn more collectibles in Devilish Mode. In this harder mode, you must survive without invincibility as devils obstruct your path through each stage. There are also all-new minigames starring Meta Knight and King Dedede!
While walking through Dream Land, Kirby discovers a tomato and decides to eat it. Yin-Yarn, the evil sorcerer who possessed the tomato (revealed to be a Metamato), appears and magically banishes Kirby into Patch Land, a world completely made of fabric, via the sock carried around his neck. In Patch Land, Kirby’s body transforms into yarn, rendering both his power to inhale and the ability to fly useless. Instead, Kirby is granted the ability to transform by the magic of the Metamato, which he uses to rescue a boy being attacked by a monster. The boy, named Prince Fluff, explains that Yin-Yarn has separated Patch Land into pieces, which was tied together by magic yarn. When they come across the first piece after defeating a monster that attacked the duo, Kirby decides to help Prince Fluff collect all seven pieces of the magic yarn and restore Patch Land.
Kirbys Extra Epic Yarn Review
If you have played a Kirby game before, then you roughly know what you’re in for. With that said, Extra Epic Yarn is not a difficult game. In fact, you can’t really die exactly. Enemies mainly just bump you around or will hit you in a way that will knock out your beads, which are the game’s collectable.
Kirby doesn’t take things lightly himself, though. Your attack allows you to disarm enemies, turn them into throwable projectiles, and even unravel them from existence. It would be quite dark if not for the cheery visuals and music. New to the 3DS version, you also have access to “Ravel Abilities” which are similar to power-ups in previous Kirby games.
The “Extra” in Kirby’s Extra Epic Yarn isn’t just there for show. Players can utilize the new “Devilish Mode” if looking for more of a challenge. In this, a yarn monster will consistently appear to shoot projectiles. Kirby also has a health meter, adding an actual sense of danger to the otherwise easy romp. If you’re one of those hardcore gamers who likes to complain that Kirby games are too easy, this is for you.
Kirby’s Extra Epic Yarn certainly has a home on the 3DS. Unfortunately, the co-op mode in the Wii version is gone and the “fuzziness” of the visuals here makes it suffer a bit, but it’s still good wholesome fun. Even though we’re all about the Switch now in 2019, it’s nice to see one last quality title from Nintendo make its way to the handheld. This is as good of a sendoff as we could hope for.
