Master of Orion Review

I love this game, I love all of the 4X games I own and Master of Orion is actually my favourite of the long list I have. You get to choose from very distinctive races and you can alter the starting conditions for the map, including the AI player count, and victory types and pirates, anomalies and a few other things along the way.

The game does not play like traditional 4X games where you can build whatever you want and build as big of an army that you need whenever you want to. You need to make choices as to whether you want to focus on production, research or food on the majority of your planets and this makes you plan your expansion carefully, picking the right planets so as to improve your chances of outmanoeuvring your opponent in the late game.

Of all the other 4X games I have played the late game gets a little boring because you have built everything and you have researched far, far ahead of the enemy and you control most of the map. For example, in Civilisation 5 (I still love it), I build every building in every city so every city is a carbon copy of the others (minus the wonders and special buildings). As a result of this, I am left as being the only leader in the Modern age and the others are still in the Medieval or Renaissance ages. The late game always degrades into a bloodbath with the technologically advanced Babylonians, Vikings or Egyptians destroying the British, American or German leaders in approximately 5 turns each. Not so in Master of Orion wherein every single game I have played, I have either won by the skin of my teeth in a quick gamble or lost it all to a misstep in my plan.

Overall, the game is actually really fun if you like planning your moves out in advance (like in chess) and thinking about the long-term ramifications of your actions and politics.

I honestly do not understand the negative reviews for Master of Orion. In my personal opinion, I think this is the best in the Master of Orion games list due to its originality and the general style in the game. I know the vast majority of people will disagree with me and that is fine, but let me explain.

Summary
And that's the thing about Master of Orion: there are plenty of weighty decisions, risky maneuvers, and impactful events to consider. But they often take place in repetitive playthroughs in galaxies that don't always differentiate themselves from the next. Master of Orion shows signs of brilliance, but it's bogged down by boredom, and sometimes, the allure of the stars wanes too much to beckon us onward.
Good
  • Cutthroat diplomacy system
  • Engaging real-time combat mechanics
  • Intimate leader characterization
Bad
  • Exploration becomes redundant after a while
  • Star map leads to predictable military campaigns
