Memorrha Review
A solid puzzler with a smooth challenge ramp. Some parts were a little obtuse, but that’s mostly the nature of puzzle games. There’s not really any story to speak of, here, but it does suggest things a bit as you go.
There are a few simple jumping puzzles, but they are low-stakes since you’ll just jump back a few feet if you fail. They’re more annoying than anything, and probably could have been left out, but they’re also not a huge problem.
The vegetation seems semi-randomized, which ended up being a problem for me, as I was unable to solve one puzzle due to a critical element being inside a tree. When I finally gave up and consulted a walkthrough, the person playing did not have a tree in the same location as me, and did not have that puzzle element hidden from him. YMMV here, as I suspect I just got unlucky.
The biggest negative point is the save system, which is unforgivable for a puzzle game. It operates purely on an auto-save system, but it does not auto-save each time you solve a puzzle, and only sometimes when you enter a new area. It seems to follow its own logic, and it is possible to lose progress if you quit out between the save points. As a result, this game is not suitable for short sessions. You have to decide that you want to stop, and then continue solving until the next time the save icon appears. The game seems to save the complete world state when it does save, including your position and the position/state of all puzzles and items. I don’t understand why this couldn’t have been triggered manually.
In spite of this terrible save system, I did enjoy the game from start to finish.
