Mistover Review
Mistover is a fun little game. It’s similar to Darkest Dungeon, but don’t let that fool you it’s not just a bland copy/paste anime re-skin. There’s a heavy top-down dungeon crawling mechanic, which adds another tactical layer to the gameplay (choose when / where / if you engage your enemies). There’s 3 “lanes” instead of just one, also adding a bit of complexity in which skills and formation you want to adopt (some attacks hit rows, some columns).
Which is not to say everything is an improvement over Darkest Dungeon (which is a game I adore). The music is far inferior, and less varied. There’s not enough voice lines, so you’ll hear your characters constantly repeating the same thing again and again. The UI & UX are a chore, equipping equipment / skills is so much harder and more tedious than in DD (I mean come on, I have to specifically open the tavern to see my crew? And why can’t I see what items I have when I’m trying to equip my roster, like I have to memorize what I dropped to avoid having to click on every single one to see if there are items available for that particular guy I selected).
I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that Mistover hasn’t been made with PC in mind. There is no mouse support, which always complicates things – and because of that, the menus aren’t easy to navigate since the game is meant to be played on console.
Still, even with all these criticism I’m enjoying this game. It’s fun, it’s fairly hard, it scratches a similar itch to Darkest Dungeon. The only reason I bought it on Steam rather than Switch (it would be a fun game to carry around) is because I’m hoping for the modding scene to pick it up! Considering all the additional modded content I enjoyed on Darkest Dungeon, I sure hope Mistover will be popular enough to have its own modding community 🙂
