NBA 2K Playgrounds 2 Review

First off, the amount of players is amazing! You can play as Michael Jordan, something you could never do in NBA jam or any other bball game in the 90’s. You can also play as Wilt Chamberlain, Jerry West, Patrick Ewing, Julius Erving, Clyde the glide, along with all the current stars.

A lot of guys have their signature moves as well which is pretty damn impressive. Jordans fadeaway jumper and several signature dunks are here along with Kareem’s skyhook, Kobe’s “Jordan” fadeaway, Vince Carter’s dunks, Curry’s three point shot, Magic’s passes…. There are just so many and it definitely adds to the fun beyond doing absurd dunks.

Many people will point to 2K as the villain and that is fair. But I put alot of the blame on the developer, especially Matthew Karch. Many of the features of this game were supposed to be added to the original, never happened. Karch also said he wanted fewer people to buy the roster unlock, but now there is added grind leading people to want to get it. It also seems like some issues such as communication and honestly a drive to create a great game still linger. Also the community is filled with people who just defend whatever the developer says or does.

The grind is on par with any other game worth playing for the rewards. I like this one better than the first because of season mode. Surprisingly, that isn’t the only great mode I enjoy playing. Exhibition is fantastic now because of the daily challenges. Besides that, you clearly get many opportunities to earn enough credits to unlock ALL the players in the game. That’s including those in the game now AND the ones being released in the future. But this is the world we live in today. Too many self-proclaimed “gamers” what stuff now without working for it. This game was made for real gamers and fans of grind=reward. Pick it up. You won’t be sorry.

Summary
It's fun to jump in for a few games and rack up points through extravagant slam dunks with your favorite players from the past and present. However, the novelty of arcade-style basketball wears thin quickly in NBA 2K Playgrounds 2. There isn't much to keep you coming back once you've had your fill, and the nagging gameplay flaws hold back the experience. The game lacks a distinct personality, and that's a missed opportunity for any basketball game, let alone one that tries so hard to have one.
