Seasons after Fall Review
Seasons After Fall is a puzzle platformer by French developer Swing Swing Submarine. Unlike their previous games, which were also puzzle platformers, this one offers one big semi-open world, where more gets accessible as you go along and learn new abilities, much like in a Metroidvania game. It’s entirely without combat though, all your powers just allow you to solve new puzzles.
Let’s get the most obvious thing out of the way first, Seasons After Fall is absolutely gorgeous. The game has an almost hand-painted look to it, with makes good use of bold colours. Every single area is visually distinct, yet the game presents a coherent whole. The games main mechanic, changing seasons, makes this all the more impressive as each season is also visually distinct.
While not as technically advanced as some other games, like Dust: An Elysian Tail, the animations look really good in Seasons after Fall, and a lot of care seems to have been put into making the main character, a young fox, feel like a young playful fox. The animation show an impressive attention for details in how the fox moves.
The gamplay in Seasons after Fall is relatively simple. It’s structured like a typical Metroidvania game, where getting a new power opens up more of the map, and you use this to get yet another new power, up until the end of the game. In Seasons after Fall these powers are the abilities to change seasons. Changing season makes some changes to things around you, like for an example, in spring the water levels will be higher, and in winter water freezes. In summer certain plants will grow and water levels will be lower, and in autumn mushrooms grow and winds will be stronger. It’s a simple concept, but it works well here.
I really enjoyed my time with Seasons after Fall. It was a beautiful game and it feels like the developers had put a lot of effort into it. I previously mentioned the animators showing an impressive attention to detail. The game is sadly not flawless, it’s a bit on the easy side, and it’s also relatively short, but what’s in there is excellent, and I still feel that I can recommend this game to almost everyone.
