The End is Nigh
The End Is Nigh is a sprawling adventure platformer where the player takes control over Ash, one of few “things” that have “survived” the “end of the world”.
Follow Ash as he flops his way through a future of pain and suffering. Feel his stress levels rise as you throw him into an endless swarm of decaying, mutant animal-like creatures and help aid his final epic quest… to simply make a friend (out of pieces of people he finds along his journey).
Oh, also you collect video game cartridges and tumors! if that does anything for ya.
The game is divided into 600+ single-screen interconnected levels, forming 12+ chapters. The objective of the game is to clear the platforming challenges of each screen and proceed to the next, exploring the world and collecting items along the way. Collectable items include tumors, which unlock bonus levels, and video game cartridges, which unlock minigames. The game also features several hidden extras and endings, as well as achievements.
Features:
- 600+ levels!
- 12+ explorable chapters!
- 20+ collectible and fully playable mini game cartridges! (each with their own tiny achievements!)
- 80+ achievements that will make you feel good about yourself
- 100s of collectible little squishy tumors!
- loads of hidden extras and endings that you will probably see someone else find before you do!
- and stress!
The End is Nigh Review
A lot of people have called The End is Nigh “Super Meat Boy 2”. I somewhat agree. It definitely has a similar aesthetic and certain elements are reminiscient of SMB. It’s closer to Super Meat Boy than Edmund’s other games, with its precision jumps and retro stages, certain obstacles and collectibles. It will certainly keep you busy for a few days, and far longer if you aim for some of the more ridiculous challenges or achievement hunting.
Sitting at 99% completion on my main save file, I think it goes without saying I’ve enjoyed the game quite a bit. I like the level design and hunting down secrets. I’ve both adored and loathed the retro stages and I don’t think I can leave this game unfinished, even if some of the iron man challenges are sure to give me a hard time.
The controls are tight, there’s no vsync delay, the soundtrack is a well-rendered heavy metal/8-bit mixture of classical pieces, the graphics look nice (and remind me of SMB on several occasions). Most rooms are enjoyable to play and hunting down secrets is mostly fun. The few abilities (such as dashing downwards) you have from the start are revealed as the game progresses, which means you’ll probably miss out on something your first time through, but on subsequent playthroughs you know immediately how to utilize them. This is unlike metroidvania games where you hunt down abilities first and then return to previous areas. Personally I think it was a refreshing touch.
My 5 cents above are written at 29 hours of gameplay and a 99% savefile. Whether this game stands the test of time remains to be seen, but at any rate, it’s definitely kept me entertained so far and I’m looking forward to beating it again.
