The First Tree
From the creator of Home is Where One Starts… comes The First Tree, a third-person exploration game centered around two parallel stories: a fox trying to find her missing family, and a son reconnecting with his father in Alaska. Players take control of the fox on a poignant and beautiful journey that crescendos at the source of life, and perhaps result in an understanding of death. Along the way, players can uncover artifacts and stories from the son’s life as he becomes intertwined in the fox’s journey towards The First Tree.
Key Features:
- For fans of Journey, Firewatch, and Shelter.
- Not a “fox simulator,” but an emotional, intimate story by a one-man team with an ending you won’t soon forget.
- Featuring a gorgeous soundtrack by acclaimed artists like Message to Bears, Lowercase Noises, and Josh Kramer.
- A short game (about an hour and a half) focused on story with some light puzzle solving and platforming.
The First Tree Review
I love walking sims so I decided to give The First Tree a chance. These exploration games – in my experience – come in the form of first person games. This one, however, is played from the third person and, interestingly, we control a fox to assist her with reconnecting with her family.
At the same time there will be regular narration sessions between a boy and a girl – emphasis is on the former who describes his childhood with particular focus on his relationship with his father. Death is one of the themes here and as he remembers his long-passed-away dad some of these sections can easily make the experience with First Tree quite emotional.
This is also the reason why some users may not be able to relate, at all. It is not necessarily due to the fact that they haven’t, yet, experienced real loss. It’s just that this game is quite unique and expectations are usually different. In practice, we walk / run around interacting with various items and achievement hunters will need to look up every nook and cranny to collect all the stars out there.
Graphically, the game looks simplistic but at the same time the artwork is great and the accompanying music is just gorgeous. Some of you experts at the walking sim genre may immediately recognise the voice acting done by the lady (I believe she was one of the protagonists in Gone Home).
