The Room Three

The Room Three

Continuing the critically acclaimed ‘The Room’ game series, Fireproof Games are proud to bring the third instalment to PC. The Room Three continues the tactile puzzle-solving gameplay of its predecessors while considerably expanding the world for the player to explore. Once again, Fireproof Games have re-built, re-textured and re-lit every asset and environment to bring the mysterious world of The Room to life. In The Room Three you find yourself lured to a remote island, where you must draw upon all your puzzle-solving ability to navigate a series of trials devised by a mysterious figure known only as “The Craftsman”. Fireproof Games are a small independent team working in Guildford in the UK. We self-published our first game The Room on iPad in September 2012 and were stunned with both the critical success and our new-found fan-base, not to mention multiple international awards. The Room games have since changed our lives and we hope you enjoy playing them as much as we enjoyed making them.

The Room Three Review

The Room 3 expands on the complexity of its previous puzzle design in novel ways. As ever, centerpiece puzzles come in the form of elaborate boxes that can be unlocked and unpacked using keys, cracked codes, and sound logic. The act of physically interacting with a touch-screen to manipulate the world adds a great, tangible sensation to solving these puzzles. Like the previous games you will be spending your time solving puzzles by finding and using items along with looking for hidden compartments or solving other puzzles. The elements that were in the previous games such as the eyeglass are still present and have the same use of seeing things that aren’t there. The timed hint system is there to help you if you are stuck at any given moment. If you have not played the previous room games it’s actually okay to jump in from here if you don’t wish to invest in the previous titles. Although I do recommend playing those as well just as highly as this one, there are only a few minor story overlaps that you might miss out on for not playing the previous ones.

This may be an unpopular opinion but one of the major differences with this title that I wasn’t always a huge fan of was the scale of the game. In the previous games all your puzzles were self contained to a room and particular objects. Everything felt intricate and personal. There are still some moments like this; however for the most part you will be grabbing an item and than trekking a few rooms to do one thing than traveling back. This is still really a low key complaint for me. I still had a lot of fun solving all of the puzzles.

Another big change with this title is the concept of multiple endings. While these endings are not huge story developers it is still a really excellent addition. A really cool thing about the multiple endings as well is the absence of hand holding. Once you reach the end game point the clue system is no longer active. The puzzles ramp up in detail and intricacies and it becomes a peak moment in the series. The last big positive change with this installation in the series is the length of play. I put roughly two hours each in the previous titles and this title I put nearly six. In conclusion this is an excellent addition to the pc series like many thought it would be after either playing it on mobile or having played the previous installments. It is most definitely worth the purchase.

Summary
The Room Three is Fireproof Games’ most ambitious puzzle game yet. Solving puzzles across enormous spaces is incredibly satisfying, and there’s so many varied things to think about, tools to tinker with, and systems to explore that I’m still finding them after the ending. That ending contributed little to a potentially interesting universe that hopefully fleshes itself out in the post-game puzzles I can’t wait to keep discovering.
