Wargroove is a Nintendo Wars-style turn-based tactics video game in which players explore maps and battle foes. Players can choose to take control of one of fifteen commanders, each with their own campaign, motivations and personality.

The game supports local and online multiplayer including player versus player and cooperative play. The game features campaign editing tools which allow players to create their own maps. There is also an overworld editor for linking different missions together; this can let the player create branching paths and set missions to unlock under certain conditions.

Wargroove Review

Wargroove is a strategy game with turn-based combat that relies on a rock-paper-scissors gameplay system. This makes for a easy to learn but hard to master game, just like its spiritual successor, Advance Wars.

This game’s obviously all about the gameplay. Even with the style change (from modern war to a fantasy one) the game plays out very much like the old Advance Wars: every unit has two actions per turn (one of them is movement), there are different types of terrain that boost the defense of the units on them and and you can capture cities and barracks in order to respectively get more gold per turn and train new units. Wargroove in this regard adds a new features: commanders. These are a special and powerful units that serve as, well, commanders of the army and have special abilites, called wargrooves. Each commander has a unique wargroove (that needs to be charged) that has a special effect upon use (heal/damage all units in a radius, move or spawn new units, …).

This game is a great bang for your buck. There is a story mode that should last at least 18-20 hours (not counting all perfect missions) and obviously you can play multiplayer matches against friend and random opponents alike. In addition to these two gamemodes you also get arcade (mini campaigns where you get to choose your commander), puzzle mode (where you have win in one turn, some of these missions are HARD) and, if this isn’t enough, you can even download additional maps and campaigns from the steam workshop.

Summary
Wargroove is a delight to play, and the possibility of an endless supply of content for it is a tantalizing prospect. Chucklefish could have offered up a prettied-up take on Advance Wars with online multiplayer and called it a day. Instead, it's made meaningful improvements that make this both a satisfying answer to starved Advance Wars fans' wishes and a genuinely great experience on its own merits.
