Wolfenstein 2 The New Colossus Review

The New Colossus is a fantastic game. As far as first-person shooters go it is mechanically near perfect, with fluid, intuitive, explosive action. The cutscenes are a cinematic leap ahead of most other games (yet easily skippable if preferred). It does not innovate heavily over The New Order, and this is easily forgiven, being that the first game was phenomenal and worthy of an encore. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Too many studios readily forget this wisdom. The plot lags a bit in the early missions but rapidly picks up , and contains some of the most “Whoa!” moments I’ve ever experienced in a game. The wider diversity of weapon and player perks are welcome. Level designs are novel but rarely confusing (if you don’t know where to go when you have a map with an objective marker, then I don’t know how to help you). The hub is greatly improved as well, and a “Wolfstone” arcade machine preserves the ability to replay the original Wolfenstein 3D game (with some superficial changes). One puzzling backstep in this sequel is the omission of a full level replay option, though this is somewhat offset by the ability to replay the individual “districts” of each mission once you unlock the Enigma Machine.

As many reviews here mention, the game does contain overt political and social justice themes. If you don’t like that, I would suggest that a game about liberating your toppled democracy from ethno-fascists is probably not the game for you. Having no fascist sensibilities myself I found it completely inoffensive and quite delightful, despite the spastic disapproval of the alt-right. That this game currently has only “Mixed” user reviews on Steam is a tragedy, and a symptom of the reactionary delirium gripping the western world today.

Summary
The New Colossus never lets you forget who and why you're fighting. Nazi brutality is on full display, from the blown-out, irradiated remains of Manhattan to each of the resistance members, who all carry mental scars if not physical ones. You're never given a chance between cutscenes, missions, and even downtime on the U-boat to lose sight of the Reich's cruelty. Wolfenstein's tense gameplay elevates this further by giving you the power to truly resist--and come out of each battle ready for another fight.
Good
  • Variety in combat styles and level design gives you the tools to fight back against an overwhelming force
  • Unwavering anti-Nazi attitude validates the resistance--and the catharsis you experience killing Nazis
  • Consistently balances comic relief with heavy subject matter
Bad
  • Some heavy-handed scenes and patriotic platitudes cloud the game's message
