ZeroRanger Review
ZeroRanger vindicated my feeling that I can indeed enjoy a shoot ’em up! I always felt that I should love the shmup genre, they look like such awesome action games, but in practice I rarely do. They’re difficult in a way that makes me feel that when I finally beat the game, it’s not because of my skills but rather because I played it so much that I ended up memorizing the patterns bit by bit, dying just a little further every time. I don’t enjoy this kind of difficulty because the portion of new content that I experience each run is quite small.
ZeroRanger feels different. You don’t have to work in order to reach some enjoyment, the enjoyment comes to you so effortlessly that you end up doing the work anyway. First and foremost the game lets itself be enjoyed: it is generous with lives, has persistent unlockable continues, lets you restart at any level and has checkpoints such that you can play through a lot of new content and make considerable progress with every attempt. It allows you to experience significant chunks of the levels without making you feel like you need to memorize them first. It’s a great game in every way, and it’s only because it lets you experience all this fantastic content without too much pain that you do choose to replay it and end up memorizing some difficult patterns.
It is very well polished, it has awesome weapons, enemies, bosses, levels, graphics, soundtrack, atmosphere, story… and most importantly it will allow you to enjoy all of it!
