The Pillars of the Earth Review

Pillars of the earth is similar to Telltale games only it is done in old fashioned traditional point&click style. But there aren’t any puzzles, only story just like in Telltale games. Only this one tells the story better, you get to love the characters and you care about them.

Gameplay basically consists of talking to people and choosing what to say. A little bit of exploration, item collecting, but nothing difficult. So point&click fans may not find this game interesting if they look for puzzles. Puzzles(if you can even call them puzzles) are easy, some require more effort if you go for achievements. This game is about story telling. It’s about religion, war and love. There will be moments when you laugh and there will be moments when you cry. The game also has choices and here these choices have a meaning. Nothing will change drastically, but it’s nice to see something changed in the last chapter because your decision in the first chapter. Really nicely done.

Graphics design is great. Environments are gorgeous, character models are nicely drawn, every place you explore feels like something unique and sometimes you just stare at the screen admiring the beauty. I would prefer hand drawn characters but I’m a realist and I completely understand it would’ve cost a lot of money for developers and we all know good games like this is a niche market. Nevertheless graphics looks really good.

Sound design is another aspect where this game shines. Voice acting is outstanding and voice acting means a lot in such game because you don’t see the faces of the characters so the only way to experience their feelings is through their voices. And of course music, it’s outstanding, it fits every scene very well and create great atmosphere.

I strongly recommend this game to everyone who loves a good story and want to experience an emotional journey. Great graphics, story and sound creates an outstanding mood and makes you relive the story.
