Nioh is an action role-playing game set in Japan during the year 1600, with players taking the role of an Irish samurai named William. The player guides William on missions through enclosed environments fighting both human enemies and supernatural beings called yokai: missions are self-contained, hold alternate routes William can navigate, and selected from a menu rather than reached by navigating an open world. While navigating environments, William can find various collectables both in crates scattered through the environment and in other places within the environments such as fallen soldiers.

Nioh Review

It’s Dark Souls in feudal Japan and as a fan of those games I enjoyed Nioh for the most part. To be fair Nioh is more than a Dark Souls clone and full of neat ideas like the spirit animals that grant you new abilities and stat boosts, the crafting system which lets you create your own gear (I really liked that they even let you change the appearance of weapons and armour), the sidequests etc.

The Story is a unique mix of fantasy and real historical events, to be honest I was surprised that the protagonist William Adams, an english seafarer, actually existed. As much as I like the general idea for the story, I ultimately think that it’s one of the weakest parts of the game and mostly just serves as an exposition for the fights.

The gameplay is mostly similar to Dark Souls, however many enemies tend to be rather tanky and hard to stagger.

Nioh has no open or interconnected world and instead lets the player choose main- and side-quests from a map. Unfortunately many side-quests are just recycled levels from the main story and even some main levels feel uninspired. Another Issue I had was the fact that main missions were often unnecessarily hard because my character was below the recommended level, which in turn forced me to grind some boring side-quests, it only gets worse in the DLC’s (regardless of that they are still very good and worth playing) .

Despite it’s flaws I believe that Nioh is an excellent game that every Dark Souls/ RPG /Hack and Slay fan should at least try out.

Summary
Although the spectre of potential failure hangs heavy over any play session, dying in Nioh is never genuinely disheartening. This is thanks in part to the various avenues of character growth and many approaches you can utilize to tackle a difficult section or boss fight. It shouldn't be surprising that the foresight and patience needed to survive a battle in Dark Souls translates well to the fundamentals of samurai combat here.
