Danganronpa V3

Danganronpa V3

Welcome to a new world of Danganronpa, and prepare yourself for the biggest, most exhilarating episode yet. Set in a “psycho-cool” environment, a new cast of 16 characters find themselves kidnapped and imprisoned in a school. Inside, some will kill, some will die, and some will be punished. Reimagine what you thought high-stakes, fast-paced investigation was as you investigate twisted murder cases and condemn your new friends to death.

Key Features

  • A New Danganronpa Begins: Forget what you thought you knew about Danganronpa and join a completely new cast of Ultimates for a brand-new beginning.
  • Murder Mysteries: In a world where everyone is trying to survive, nobody’s motivations are quite what they seem. Use your skills to solve each new murder or meet a gruesome end.
  • Lie, Panic, Debate! The world is shaped by our perception of it. Fast-paced trial scenes will require lies, quick wits, and logic to guide your classmates to the right conclusions.
  • New Minigames: Between the madness of murdered peers and deadly trials, enjoy an abundance of brand-new minigames!

Danganronpa V3 continues the same style of gameplay as the first two Danganronpa games, which is split into School Life, Deadly Life, and Class Trial segments. During School Life, players interact with other characters and progress through the story until coming across a murder and entering the Deadly Life, after which they must gather evidence for use in the Class Trial. Roaming around the world and interacting with objects during both School Life and Deadly Life will yield experience points for the player. Experience points are used to level up and with each level players obtain more skill points which enable the player to equip skills to help with Class Trials. Like in previous games, Class Trials largely revolve around the Non-Stop Debate, in which characters discuss the case, with the player required to use Truth Bullets containing evidence against highlighted statements determining whether someone is lying or telling the truth.

Danganronpa V3 Review

The third game immediately sets itself apart. The opening act already shows how much the characters are being manipulated. We got a vague implication in the first game, but this game doesn’t even try to hide it. We immediately see what the characters will forget and the game is more meta than it ever was. Not only that, but the opening murder is probably the most interesting case of the entire game. It made me really excited for the game, but honestly the upcoming trials just couldn’t compare. Every trial has a giant mystery while our classmates don’t even understand the most basic of evidence. But this is a problem of the Danganronpa series. Every trial needs to be dragged out so that every character is included and so that every mini game is played every single time as well. Given the ending and the overall meaning of the game, it seems like a waste of time. The previous games were about surviving and having hope that your survival can change a collapsed society. But this one tries to end the series in an open-ended way, so changing that aspect of the game just changes the feeling of the game as much as the games that came beforehand.

Danganronpa V3 is a fitting conclusion to one of the most interesting mystery adventures out there. It started over-the-top and managed to out-do itself every single time. My only issue is that the writers opt out of telling the entire story by tricking players into believing a meta setup they immediately contradicted. Or not. It’s difficult to know what we should believe of the ending. I can understand people who were upset for not getting a satisfying conclusion, I enjoyed the twist but the last chapter just gave me more questions. But there’s no reason to stay away from this title as a Danganronpa fan, it’s as good as always and the last chapter will definitely leave an impression. I wouldn’t go into the game without playing the previous titles, but this story works seperate as well. Mystery fans might want to avoid this confusing ending.

Summary
Danganronpa V3 doesn't top the first two games overall. Its murder cases generally aren't as memorable, and its slow pace can make it feel flat in the middle. But as a sequel to those two games, it does a great job of tying the loose threads together and remaining surprising to the very end. The characters are interesting, their collective story very long but still engaging, and unraveling the mysteries of Danganronpa is ultimately satisfying--even if, at times, its unpredictability seems predictable.
Good
  • Strong start with a surprising twist draws you in quickly
  • Another memorable cast of eccentric characters hides minor but interesting surprises
  • Focuses on bigger-picture mysteries and answers long-standing questions about the world
Bad
  • Some dialogue is too heavy-handed, especially the most vulgar characters
  • Middle chapters drag, and those murder cases lack the payoff of the first trial
7.4
Good
Gameplay - 7.3
Graphics - 7.5
Audio - 7.4
