MicroTown Review
I heard about this game due to seeing the developer’s reaction to someone who bought a scam key elsewhere – I’m a sucker for a good guy developer so I bought it.
The game itself is straightforward – resource gathering and a little research, no combat – and has a deliberately simple visual aesthetic which works quite nicely. I played 3-4 hours in sandbox mode and without really trying managed to do everything there was to do; there were some challenges to overcome with the supply chain and resource management, although the biggest challenge was the inability to prioritise areas of the supply chain – effectively the villagers are completely autonomous and there is no way to say for example “I REALLY NEED WOOD.” This became a much bigger problem as the area covered expanded, which is necessary due to certain resources being only found in certain auto-generated areas (such as clay and sand) and seemed to end up confusing the game engine to the point that for a while no logs were being delivered to the sawmill for an extended period in my play through. This became the biggest factor in why my session ended up being 3-4 hours rather than one or two.
Overall I feel happy enough recommending this game even at this early stage – good developer, fun enough casual gameplay and it’s not expensive – although with the caveat that there’s no real reason to go back at this stage until more features are added and the issues with control of the supply chain are fixed.
