Disc Creatures

Disc Creatures

Disc Creatures is a tribute to classic monster catching RPGs from the golden days of portable gaming. Choose your three starter creatures and set off as a licensed Disc Ranger (a DiscR!) to tame the greatest of creatures and bring peace to the land!

Disc Creatures is set in a world where humans live alongside a wildly varied cast of creatures, all with different personalities, abilities, and moral codes. Travel across a quaint, quirky landscape, taming creatures and helping those in need! Mysteries fill the land of Disc Creatures, and some are darker and more formidable than one might expect…

When I was a kid, I was really into games that had a lot of unique monsters. Monster-themed games came out one after another, and among these titles, a variety of interesting monsters were born. I was influenced by this and used to show off the monsters I thought up and drew on the edge of my notebook to my friends. Disc Creatures is a game I’ve made without forgetting the monsters that were born on the edge of that notebook. While searching for memories of games at that time, I made this game with a feeling of nostalgia myself. If you consider this is nostalgic as well, I ask you to play the game remembering a little about the old days.

Disc Creatures Review

Monster collecting RPGs are my favorite games. My love for this genre stems back to Pokemon and Dragon Quest Monsters for the Game Boy (Color), a system which obviously won’t see any new releases ever again. Sure, systems and games evolve and there are new ones with nicer graphics and amazing soundtracks – yet here I am, craving games that look and sound like they came out 20 years ago, because I can’t quite get the same sense of wonder out of modern stuff.
I’m eternally thankful for indie developers who are aware that people like me exist and develop games like Disc Creatures.

Even though 2019 is packed with critically acclaimed releases of well-known series, one I was looking forward to more than most others is this very game. Now one day after the release I’m already 15 hours in because it’s so hard to stop. It’s exactly what I was hoping for: nostalgic, yet so new and unknown. I LOVE the fact that I knew pretty much nothing about this game beforehand. I love discovering new creatures and won’t continue with the story until I think I “caught” every single one in the current area. I also think the battle system is really well made. It’s not complicated at all, but there are battles where you should think it through instead of just choosing the strongest move.

Had this been an actual Game Boy game many years ago, I’m sure I would have loved it just the same. The only thing I’m missing is a multiplayer mode, because how awesome would it be to send my favorite creatures into battle against others? Still, even without one I enjoy it tremendously, so if you share my sentiments, please don’t hesitate and get this little gem!
