Black Future 88
Black Future ’88 is a Synth-Punk roguelike 2D action Shooter. Vertically climb an always evolving procedural tower to reach the top and kill its insane owner…before your heart explodes. Shoot, slash, dash and upgrade yourself to survive the endless waves of deadly traps, homicidal AI, crazed junkies and colossal Wardens standing in your way in a stylish alternative version of 1988.
The world is reeling from a nuclear cataclysm, created by Duncan, the tower architect. The First of his bombs fell in the summer of 1988, and by December they had blacked-out the sun with endless rain. We decided to stop keeping time after this, and it’s been 1988 ever since. Everything that lived through the initial attack will die in the extreme floods that followed. These are the times after, where there are no more months, or even weeks…everything is measured in minutes left to live.
Take on the mantle of one of the last remaining misfit survivors, and fight your way to the top of the tower to kill the architect and stop the endless nuclear rain. Ascend to die, and die to survive.

Black Future 88 Review
Game’s story takes place in a grim-alternate history where is one and the only year – 1988. Your goal is to climb the top of procedural, evolving tower. Why, you ask? At the top of the tower, there’s a maniac named “Duncan”, who destroyed the world with nuclear fire (and he’s also an architect of the tower),sitting and waiting for your payback. He will not just be sitting, he will also send hordes of cutthroats, soldiers, robots and bosses to take you down.
As I mentioned earlier, you have limited time before your time runs out. What happens then? Your hearth will… well… explode. That’s it. Game offers many strategical weapons, abilities and curses that can either help you increase the timer or close the distance between you and your final destination. There are 5 different characters to choose from, each of them having their own weapons, weaknesses and buffs. So… 5 characters… what about weapons? Glad you asked. Game’s weapon arsenal is huge. There are many weapons to choose from, ranging from pistols to laser rifles. There are also some melee weapons, such as swords, hammers and axes. Speaking of weapons, some weapons have unlimited ammunition, but many weapons dropped from enemies have limitless ammo, depending on rarity etc.. Once in a while, you’ll come across a boss enemy. Boss fights are (as almost everything else in this game) well-made and aren’t always easy to defeat, especially on your first run.
Now for the graphics = Honestly, I really like this new synth-punk(y) graphics style! Developer’s take on this retro-synth-cyberpunk dystopian world was an awesome move from their side, and I think that BF ’88’s wallpaper will stay as my PC’s background for some time 😀 Lights are flashing, everything is bright and not to mention blurry effect of the ’80s.
I don’t usually include separate review category for soundtrack, but in games like this one, I have to do it. Game’s soundtrack is well-chosen and greatly contrasts to game’s flow. As a Steam page of this game says: “Death never sounded so good” , and It’s true! Soundtrack of this game is like eating your favourite meal…
