Age of Wonders Planetfall Review

Age of Wonders: Planetfall is probably best described as a blend of the Civilization, Total War, and XCOM series.

The game includes a good tutorial and gives you an idea of how the rest of it is going to play. While it should be accessible to anyone interested in a strategy game, Age of Wonders has a rather unique way of playing.

As far as the campaign goes, each race (of which there are 6) has two relatively long missions, with hero progress and choices carrying over to the next mission. The decisions you make have an effect on some later missions, particularly the last mission, but there is no wrong way to win. The story is honestly a bit bland.

Like many 4X games, battle is absolutely necessary and cannot be avoided. It frees up occupied tiles, awards resources and hero items, and grants your troops experience. You field army stacks of no more than 6 units, typically led by a hero. These stacks can reinforce each other in battle. At the beginning, you explore from your starting position, coming into conflict with neutral forces that occupy your expansion paths. Eventually you encounter other players and may engage them in diplomacy or war.

There are only 3 major resources in the game: food, energy, and “cosmite”. The latter two are used to create and maintain combat units, with “cosmite” being required to build more advanced troops or augment existing troops to perform better in combat. This means lower tier units can still serve a role (and indeed may be necessary) in late-game compositions.

Research and city-building has parallels to Civilization but is more narrow. It is focused on producing stronger combat units or providing better support. Expanding revolves around building colonizers, not unlike Civilization’s settlers, which can found new cities. Unlike other similar games, players in Planetfall must “annex” territories next to settled cities to grow their borders.

Balance-wise, I think Planetfall manages to make every race and secret technology not feel underpowered, although I definitely think some are a little stronger than others. There is good variety on unit compositions, but many units are also similar to each other and you quickly realize what type of combos you like.

The game has its share of bugs and quality-of-life issues. There are annoyances to be had with end of turn notifications relating to unit movement, particularly if you reload a save where you intentionally skipped a unit’s turn.

Overall, I think Age of Wonders: Planetfall is a fun game with its own sets of challenges. Its unique playstyle is not for everyone, but if you enjoy Civilization, Total War, and XCOM, it is worth giving this game a shot. If you also just enjoy 4X games with a focus on combat, this may be a good fit.
