BattleTech

BattleTech

From original BATTLETECH/MechWarrior creator Jordan Weisman and the developers of the award-winning Shadowrun Returns series comes the next-generation of turn-based tactical ‘Mech combat.

The year is 3025 and the galaxy is trapped in a cycle of perpetual war, fought by noble houses with enormous, mechanized combat vehicles called BattleMechs. Take command of your own mercenary outfit of ‘Mechs and the MechWarriors that pilot them, struggling to stay afloat as you find yourself drawn into a brutal interstellar civil war. Upgrade your starfaring base of operations, negotiate mercenary contracts with feudal lords, repair and maintain your stable of aging BattleMechs, and execute devastating combat tactics to defeat your enemies on the battlefield.

BattleTech is a turn-based strategy video game. Players assume the role of a mercenary commander leading a “mech lance”, or group of four giant humanoid-shaped combat vehicles. The developers state that the game will have the spirit of the board game but will not use the board game’s rules. The player selects each mech’s chassis, the weapons and armor mounted on that chassis, as well as smaller details such as actuators and gyros that influence a mech’s turning radius. In addition to choosing hardware, the player can also specialize the mech’s pilots (called “mechwarriors”) by selecting talents from a skill tree.

BattleTech Review

Battletech’s turn based gameplay is deceptively deep. It has a story campaign and a score-based free-roam career mode. In both you manage your team of mechs and mechwarriors and send them on randomly generated missions. In the campaign mode you have additional story based missions that you can take your time preparing for. So, much like X-COM and other Turn Based Tactics games. But Battletech doesn’t cascade into failure from a bad mission run. Difficulty just doesn’t escalate the same way. Your monthly costs are directly related to your force strength, which drives the difficulty of missions you can reasonably take on. That governs the money you can make. You can bank up money or invest in growing your force strength to tackle bigger challenges when you’re ready. It’s up to you.

But beyond this, damage and destruction is a given. You can lose an arm, a leg, even a whole mech, and the mission can still be worth it. A clean run where none of your guys takes a hit usually means you are overpowered for the contract, or you’re simply playing too safe. Which is fine, if you’re just in it for the money. But when you start strategically taking out enemies for maximum salvage, building your lance not just to take down enemies fast, but to take out pilots and leave their mechs intact? That’s when things get really interesting.

The tutorial is short and a lot of information is not obvious on the UI. Seriously, make sure to keep the mouse pointer on top of just about any UI element and see if there is a pop up. It’s information that you don’t need for most turns, so it makes sense that it isn’t displayed all the time. But when you want to make a key decision you need to know it’s there. While it could be done better, it doesn’t stop me recommending this game. Once you understand how it all fits together, Battletech is a joy to play.
