BattleTech Heavy Metal Review
It was fun. I enjoyed some of the new weapon systems, even if a bunch of them presently feel redundant.
The mortar, being single-use, doesn’t do a meaningful enough amount of damage to make it worthwhile in 99% of encounters. The LBX and Snub PPC are basically ballistic and energy variants of the same thing, and while good at blasting away chunks, lack the precision to do more than core mechs. The TAG and NARC are generally not worth fitting. The NARC has a meaningful increase, however both are active after that volley, after which you usually won’t need either because the second volley is enough if you’re doing it right. The NARC itself is too heavy.
The HBS’ home-grown bullshark was a waste of bay space, and got promptly stripped and sold. Jack of a few trades, master of none, like so many other pointless mechs that everyone ignores when they don’t feel like playing sub-optimal.
The flashpoint was nice, but it was very short. Since mods already had added most of what HBS had added, I had bought heavy metal mostly for the flashpoint; foolishly expecting that it would be a decent amount of content being part of an expansion. Overall the expansion added an hour, possibly two if you’re slow, of gameplay. The end fight was an interesting change, but using the new hardware, was still over disappointingly quick.
Am I disappointed I bought it? No, not really. Did it leave me wanting more? Yes, absolutely. Get it when it’s on sale, you aren’t missing a whole lot.
