Bayonetta

Bayonetta

From PlatinumGames’ legendary director Hideki Kamiya of Resident Evil and Devil May Cry fame, SEGA brings one of the most universally acclaimed character action games of all time to PC.

Bayonetta. The last survivor of an ancient witch clan who keep the balance between light, dark and chaos. Entombed to protect herself – and the world as we know it – Bayonetta is discovered and revived after 500 years, sparking a chain of events with cataclysmic repercussions.

Thrust straight into battle, with only one clue to her past, Bayonetta must discover the truth and fight for the future. Her daunting conquest sees her face off against countless angelic enemies and giant foes in a game of 100% pure action.

Bayonetta is a single-player, third-person 3D action game. Its combat system is similar to that of director Hideki Kamiya’s previous title, Devil May Cry. The player controls a witch named Bayonetta, and using both melee and long ranged attacks, complex combo strings, and multiple weapons, is encouraged to explore ways to dispatch angelic enemies with as much flair as possible. Special commands or actions are woven into events, finishes, executions, and unique “Torture Attacks” in which Bayonetta summons a variety of devices to deal devastating blows to her enemies. Such devices range from chainsaws to iron maidens. Bayonetta also has unique but limited abilities that her enemies do not possess, such as “Witch Time”, which activates when the player makes a well-timed dodge to an attack. This temporarily slows time to allow Bayonetta to inflict massive amounts of counter damage before the enemies can react.

Bayonetta Review

Ten years after being release, Bayonetta still holds up as being a phenomenal game and hardly shows any age in terms of gameplay. The story is wacky and over-the-top. Bayonetta is sassy, sexy, and charming and all the characters within the storyline are unique and individual. Each of the character’s personalities are pretty extreme and exaggerated but with the intention of making you laugh, have fun, and preparing you for the wild ride.

While the majority of longer cuts scenes and character interactions are delivered in a budget friendly motionless comic style, they still convey plot points well and are entertaining. The cutscenes that are fully animated are incredibly fun to watch and action packed. They include ridiculous feats such as kickflipping a motorcycle and creating a hundred bullet barrage that penetrates a blockade of lava.

There two levels within in the game that don’t focus on the hack-and-slash combat but rather give you an alternative set of tools to use when navigating those level. These two levels stand out as being the worst when replaying. While the novelty is quite exciting the first time you play them, the returning playthroughs reveal just how shallow the gameplay mechanic for each of them is.

What makes this game truly great is the combat. After you understand dodge offset, which really should be taught in the tutorial, the control system then slowly begins to meld with your mind. The game feels great to control and becomes more natural overtime. Even after completing the game three times it is still a joy for me to play, which just shows how well executed the combat system is. It also helps that there is a solid amount of freedom and creativity in how you structure combos, and that there are a plethora of different weapons to unlock which all control uniquely.
