Beat Hazard 2 Review
I was a fan of Audiosurf many years ago and recently decided I wanted another music-based game like that to chill out with. The issue I ran into was that I’ve moved entirely to using a streaming service rather than MP3s, which made my old Audiosurf unplayable. Beat Hazard 2 has an ‘Open Mic’ function that allows you to use ANY music you play through your PC – all streaming services, Youtube, inline from your phone, you name it – so that was the major deciding factor for me.
Beat Hazard 2 looks fantastic and has some engaging systems in place like the requisite community scoreboards, live rankings between players of the same song, and a perks system to unlock different gameplay bonuses. You can choose your difficulty level and type of session, such as boss battles or survival. Gameplay is smooth and straightforward, with both keyboard and controller support. Bosses seem a bit recurrent at this stage, but apparently more variety is in the works.
It is Early Access and the price point is on the higher end compared to similar games, but again this title allows you full freedom of music sources. The developer appears to be very actively engaged with the project and has set a definite time frame of when to expect full release. It will eventually have local co-op but there are no plans to introduce online co-op. There are plans for Steam trading cards and achievements in the future. The menus need a bit of polish but overall it’s very playable even in EA stage.
Obviously, if you have any sort of visual processing issues the sheer intensity of the color strobing lights will not be for you. This game is a retinal firestorm. I love it.
One thing I’d like to see added are options to customize your player ship, both aesthetically and with more varieties of superbombs and guns. Personally I’d like online co-op too, but it is what it is.
No regrets buying. It’s what I was looking for to scratch that old Audiosurf chill mode itch.
