Castle Crashers

Castle Crashers

Castle Crashers! Hack, slash, and smash your way to victory in this newly updated edition of the insanely popular 2D arcade adventure from The Behemoth! Up to four friends can play locally or online and save your princess, defend your kingdom, and crash some castles!

With the new Barbarian Makeover Update, Castle Crashers now delivers uncapped framerate and a new Ultra texture quality mode. We even built a new, fast-paced multiplayer minigame just for you and your friends! A new optional texture quality setting located in the Game Settings Menu. Once the game has been updated, this mode will not be on by default. Players must go to the Game Settings menu and manually toggle it on. Please note, this setting will not perform the same on all systems. It is intended for use on high spec gaming systems and requires a 64-bit OS. So use at your own risk!

One of the cool things about Castle Crashers is that each of the main characters has been hand drawn, which gives them a unique look and feel. Although the game may not look quite as polished as some of its rivals, many gamers are likely to feel that this is part of the charm. The game boasts a good mixture of puzzle solving, fighting and exploration, which is sure to keep gamers on their toes and there is the option of returning as a different character once a story has been completed.

Castle Crashers Review

Castle Crashers starts with a mysterious man snatching a large (and what I assume is also expensive) crystal and four lovely princesses from the King’s throne. As one of the knights of the castle, it is your duty to retrieve the stolen goods and fair maidens. There’s no dialogue, so you won’t get more of a story than that unless you use your imagination. That’s not a bad thing, though, especially for a brawler. If you’re like me, you probably don’t need an excuse to chop enemies up into little pieces.

The Behemoth is known for making difficult games, most notably Alien Hominid, and that reputation stands true if you try and take on the campaign by yourself. Though it can be done, single-player assaults are more frustrating and less enjoyable than teaming up with other people. The biggest issue in trying to take on levels solo is that multiple enemies can assault you with ranged attacks, making it difficult to even stand up before being knocked down again. Since it’s designed to be a cooperative game, it’s hard to scold The Behemoth for making it incredibly difficult to conquer on your own. There’s no “I” in team, after all.

For those who have finished playing the story, options to play through as a different knight, another one of the many unlockable characters, or jump whole hog into the equally surreal minigames are all available. The two minigames can be played locally or online. The first, Arena, pits you against throngs of enemies in a Gladiator-style match to the death. The other game, All You Can Quaff, requires you to eat the most out of all the contestants. The latter is a button mashing minigame that is perfect for living a life of excess without all of the unwanted side effects. The games are fun and are great way to play with friends or to face-off against others if you can manage to get a game going without being unceremoniously disconnected. Connection issues are so pervasive as to limit competitive matches, drop multiplayer co-op experiences, and otherwise vex would-be bands of heroes from venturing into the magical realm of online.

Summary
Castle Crashers provides great value. The main storyline offers hours of bad-guy beating and princess-rescuing fun that it is sure to please. The ability to play with friends should make the experience richer, even if it is limited to a more local experience. As a testament to its entertainment, feature losses and some disappointing online play hardly slow this juggernaut of amusement down. This is an absurdly hilarious romp you won't soon forget.
