Disco Elysium Review
First game in 20 years that really captures the same feeling and writing as Planescape: Torment.
Disco Elysium manages to walk this fine line between adventure game and RPG, in the way that it has XP, equipment, stats, etc but most of the game is driven by dialogue and puzzle solving. This might not be everyone’s style, but if it is, this game does it very, very well.
The dialogue and writing is easily the best thing of this game and probably the best of any game I’ve played in a long while. It has amazing, deep delving lines of dialogue with many branches while managing to step around the age old (Option 1 is good, 2 is neutral, 3 is evil) trope so many RPGs have sadly fallen into.
Rather than alignment or morality you pick a personality for your dialogue options. And damn it does them well. Political dillemas, deranged thoughts and inflections, intimate and surface social interactions, etc.
On top of that it really takes an innovative approach to skills in a game like this. Rather than hide half the dialogue tree behind a certain skill, skills will rather give you insights and hints into what direction could proof beneficial, and the few actual skill checks move the story forward in a different direction rather than lock you out if you fail.
All in all, if you’re a fan of dialogue driven games ala Planescape, or adventure/puzzle games like Monkey Island or Full Throttle I definitely think you’ll enjoy this one.
