Dragon’s Dogma Review

What we have here is an honest to goodness Role-Playing Game. Not a linear, turn based mess just a step above a game of checkers in terms of action, nor is it a fussy disaster of dialogue trees with binary “good or bad” moral choices and NPC partners judging your every decision.

Dragon’s Dogma’s gameplay is pretty solid. Character building and leveling are slightly handicapped by the character growth system. Characters are class-based, and classes can be changed almost at any time (by visiting one of two characters), but statistics grow based on what class the character is in when they go up a level. Often this can leave the player with a sense that they’re eventually going to end up with abilities too low to finish the game, though this never really ends up being the case. Equipment is a much greater component then leveling, and even the hardest end-of-game enemies can be defeated by a sub-optimal character.

The story seems pretty standard for the first half of the game or so; a great dragon steals the player character’s heart, and he or she must take up arms, grow in strength, and eventually challenge and slay the dragon. It does a good job of luring the player into a false sense of familiarity before twisting around during the final third of the game. If I offer any more details than that, it will absolutely ruin the best parts of the story, but it really is more complex than it looks on the surface.

Dragon’s Dogma really is a game worth playing. Take up arms and fight, or flee and abandon all illusions of control. The choice, as ever, is yours, Arisen.

Summary
It’s difficult to argue that Dragon’s Dogma is a universally great game. It’s great at combat and exploration, but the quests are often boring, the fiction is turgid and its technical problems are unignorable. But it’s a very good game, and it’s so interesting that I’m inclined to forgive most of its problems because it succeeds in such important ways.
